CENTER … Cast on 181 sts. Work in garter st (k each row) for 27 inches. Bind off loosely. Pin out center to measure 30 inches square. Press through damp cloth and allow to remain pinned out until dry.

BORDER (Make 4 pieces) … Start­ing at outer edge, cast on 289 sts and k across. Work in pattern as follows: 1st row: P 2 tog, p 2, * k 2, O, k 1, O, k 2, p 7. Repeat from * across to last 9 sts, k 2, O, k 1, O, k 2, p 2, p 2 tog. 2nd row: Sl 1, k 2 tog, p.s.s.o., * p 7, k 2, sl 1, k 2 tog, p.s.s.o., k 2. Repeat from * across to last 10 sts, p 7, sl 1, k 2 tog, p.s.s.o. 3rd row: K 2 tog, k 1, * O, k 3, O, k 2, p 5, k 2. Repeat from * across to last 6 sts, O, k 3, O, k 1, k 2 tog. 4th row: P 3 tog, p 6, * k 1, sl 1, k 2 tog, p.s.s.o., k 1, p 9. Repeat from * across to last 14 sts, k 1, sl 1, k 2 tog, p.s.s.o., k 1, p 6, p 3 tog. 5th row: K 2 tog, k 3, * O, k 2, p 3, k 2, O, k 5. Repeat from * across to last 12 sts, O, k 2, p 3, k 2, O, k 3, k 2 tog. 6th row: P 2 tog, p 5, * sl 1, k 2 tog, p.s.s.o., p 11. Repeat from * across to last 10 sts, sl 1, k 2 tog, p.s.s.o., p 5, p 2 tog. Repeat 1st to 6th rows incl 8 more times (181 sts remain). Bind off. Sew the bound-off sts of border pieces to the 30-inch edges of Center. Sew corner seams. Pin out to measurement and press through damp cloth.
