MATERIALS:
CHADWICK'S RED HEART BABY WOOL, 4 balls (¾ oz. balls).
Milward's Casein Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 2 (2¾ mm. size), and 1 pair No. 4 (3½ mm. size).
CLARK'S O.N.T. or J. & P. COATS SIX STRAND COTTON, 1 skein each of Blue, Yellow and Pink.

MEASUREMENTS OF FINISHED GARMENT: Chest—20 inches. Length from shoulder to lower edge—12½ inches. Side seam—8 inches. Sleeve seam—9 inches.

GAUGE: 7 sts make 2 inches; 9 rows make 1 inch.

PATTERN STITCH1st row: * K 4, p 1, k 5, p 1. Repeat from * across, ending with k 4. 2nd row: * P 4, k 1, p 5, k 1. Repeat from * across, ending with p 4. 3rd row: * K 4, p 1, k 3, k 2 tog, O, p 1. Repeat from * across, ending with k 4. 4th and all even rows: Same as 2nd row. 5th row: * K 4, p 1, k 2, k 2 tog, O, k 1, p 1. Repeat from * across, ending with k 4. 7th row: * K 4, p 1, k 1, k 2 tog, O, k 2, p 1. Repeat from * across, ending with k 4. 9th row: * K 4, p 1, k 2 tog, O, k 3, p 1. Repeat from * across, ending with k 4. 11th row: * K 4, p 2 tog, keep yarn in front of work for 1st st, k 4, p 1. Repeat from * across, ending with k 4. 12th row: Same as 2nd row. Repeat these 12 rows for pattern.

BACK … With No. 2 needles, cast on 82 sts and work as follows: 1st row: K 2, * p 2, k 2. Repeat from * across. 2nd row: P 2, * k 2, p 2. Repeat from * across. Repeat these 2 rows alternately for 1½ inches, decreasing 1 st on the last row. Change to No. 4 needles and work in Pattern Stitch until piece measures 8 inches in all. Place a marker at both ends of work to indicate end of side seam. Continue straight until piece measures 12½ inches in all. Next row: Work across 1st 22 sts and place them on a stitch holder to be worked later. Bind off loosely for back of neck the next 37 sts. Continue working over the remaining 22 sts in Pattern Stitch as established for 1½ inches and place these sts on a stitch holder. Attach yarn at neck edge and work other shoulder to correspond. Next row: Work across 1st 22 sts. Cast on 37 sts for front of neck and work 22 sts from stitch holder. When piece measures 9 inches from marker, place another marker in work (sleeve sts will be picked up between markers). Continue straight until piece measures 6½ inches from last marker, increasing 1 st on the last row. Change to No. 2 needles and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 1½ inches. Bind off loosely in ribbing.

BACK NECKBAND … With right side facing, and No. 2 needles, pick up 46 sts along back of neck. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 8 rows. Bind off loosely in ribbing.

FRONT NECKBAND … With right side facing, and No. 2 needles, pick up 60 sts and work same as Back Neckband.

SLEEVES … With right side facing and No. 4 needles, pick up 59 sts between markers. Work straight in Pattern Stitch until sleeve measures 4 inches. Now dec 1 st at both ends of every 4th row until 39 sts remain. Work straight until sleeve measures 7½ inches, decreasing 1 st on the last row. Change to No. 2 needles and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 1½ inches. Bind off loosely in ribbing.

FINISHING … Pin pieces to measurements given and press through damp cloth. Sew underarm and sleeve seams in one continuous seam. Sew ends of neckband.

EMBROIDERY … Using a blunt tapestry needle and Yellow Six Strand Cotton work a French knot in 2nd stockinette stitch panel from armhole, 1½ inches from shoulder. Work another knot in 3rd panel 1½ inches from neck edge. In 4th panel work 1 knot 1 inch from neck edge and 1 knot 2¼ inches from neck edge. With Pink work flowers in lazy daisy stitches around knots. With Blue work curved stems in stem stitch above and below flowers and add leaves in lazy daisy stitch. With Yellow work two groups of 3 knots each in space between stems and flower. Work other 3 corresponding panels on front to match.
