Smarty & Sassy Sweater Patterns

SIZES 8 (10-12-14).

NOTE—Underline or circle the num­bers applying to the size desired. The first number in each group is for size 8, the second for size 10, the third for size 12, the fourth for size 14.

MATERIALS—SPINNERIN PILGRIM 5 (5-6-6) skeins; 1 pair Knit­ting Needles No. 1; 1 pair Knitting Nee­dles No. 4; 1 set double point needles No. 1.

MEASUREMENTS—Chest 26½ (28-30-32) inches; bottom to underarm 13 (13½-14-14) inches; sleeves to underarm 13 (13¾-14½-15½) inches.

GAUGE—6 sts. = 1 inch. 9 rows = 1 inch. Accurate gauge is essential.

PATTERNFor 2093-A: Ribbing of K2, P2. For 2093-B: Stockinette St. (knit 1 row, purl 1 row). Neck, sleeve and waist bands—Ribbing of K2, P2.

BACK—Using No. 1 needles, cast on 84 (88-92-96) sts. Work in ribbing of K2, P2 for 2½ inches. Change to No. 4 needles and continue in pattern until back measures 12 (12½-13-13) inches from start or desired length to underarm. At the beg. of each of the next 2 rows, bind off 3 (4-4-4) sts. Dec. 1 st. each end of needle every other row 3 (3-3-4) times; (72 (74-78-80) sts. on needle). Work even until armhole measures 5½ (6-6¼-6½) inches straight up from underarm. At the beg. of each of the next 8 (6-6-6) rows, bind off 5 (7-7-7) sts. Bind off remaining 32 (32-36-38) sts. loosely.

FRONT—Work in same manner as back until armhole shaping is completed; (72 (74-78-80) sts. on needle). Work in pattern over first 36 (37-39-40) sts. and place on holder to be worked later for left shoulder. On 36 (37-39-40) sts. of right shoulder, dec. 1 st. at neck edge every 3rd (3rd-4th-4th) row, 16 (16-18-19) times; (20 (21-21-21) sts. on needle). When armhole measures 5½ (6-6¼-6½) inches straight up from underarm, at arm edge, bind off 5 (7-7-7) sts., 4 (3-3-3) times. Work sts. of left shoulder to cor­respond.

SLEEVES—Using No. 1 needles, cast on 48 (48-52-52) sts. Work in ribbing of K2, P2 for 2¾ (3-3-3) inches. Change to No. 4 needles and working in pattern, inc. 1 st. each end of needle every inch until there are 62 (64-68-72) sts. on nee­dle. Work even until sleeve measures 13 (13¾-14½-15½) inches from start or de­sired length to underarm. At the beg. of each of the next 2 rows, bind off 6 (6-7-7) sts. Dec. 1 st. each end of needle every other row for 2¼ (2½-2½-3) inches. Then bind off 2 sts. at the beg. of every row until 14 (14-16-18) sts. re­main on needle. Bind off loosely.

FINISHING—Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew sleeves in armholes, matching underarm seams. Using No. 1 double point needles, pick up 28 (28-28-32) sts. across back of neck on one needle; pick up 48 (48-52-52) sts. down left front neck on 2nd needle; pick up 50 (50-54-54) sts. up right front on 3rd needle. Work in ribbing as follows: Round 1—K2, P2 in ribbing to last 3 sts. of 2nd needle, K3. At the beg. of 3rd needle, K3 and finish row in ribbing to correspond with 2nd needle. Round 2—K2, P2 in ribbing to last 3 sts. of 2nd needle, K2 tog., K1. At the beg. of 3rd needle, K1, slip 1, K1, P.S.S.O. and fol­low ribbing to end of round. Round 3—Work in ribbing pattern for 1 round. Re­peat Rounds 2 and 3 for ¾ inch. Bind off loosely, knitting the knit sts. and purl­ing the purl sts.
