MATERIALS
BERNAT Merlaine—21(22-23) skeins White; 3 skeins each colors 7550, 7537 and 7590
1 24 inch circular needle No. 2 (standard)
1 pair straight knitting needles No. 2 (standard)
I  steel crochet hook No. 3
11 buttons
1 pair shoulder pads
1 yd ½ inch elastic
1 yd 1 inch grosgrain ribbon
½ yd 1½ inch grosgrain ribbon
1 belt buckle

GAUGE: 7 sts = 1 inch; 10 rounds or rows = 1 inch

NOTE ON PATTERN STITCH: Before starting work, make a sample swatch of the pattern st. For this sample swatch, using White cast on 19 sts and work in pattern st as given for blouse until 32 rows have been completed. This is 2 repeats of the pattern and by practicing the making of the stitch you become familiar with the pattern st, so that you will find it easier to work.

SKIRT

NOTE: Any changes in the length of skirt are made before first dec round.

PATTERN STITCH FOR SKIRT: Multiple of 16 sts.
Round 1: Using Blue, knit.
Round 2: Using Blue, * K 7, then wrapping yarn 3 times around needle K the next st, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 3: * K 3 sts White, K 1 st Green, K 3 sts White, sl the next st and drop off extra loops to form a long st, K 3 sts White, K 1 st Rose, K 3 sts White, sl the next st and drop off extra loops to form a long st, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 4: * K 1 st White, K 2 sts Green, K 1 st White, K 2 sts Green, K 1 st White, sl the long st, K 1 st White, K 2 sts Rose, K 1 st White, K 2 sts Rose, K 1 st White, sl the long st, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 5: * K 1 st White, K 1 st Green, K 1 st White, K 1 st Green, K 1 st White, K 1 st Green, K 1 st White, sl the long st, K 1 st White, K 1 st Rose, K,1 st White, K 1 st Rose, K 1 st White, K 1 st Rose, K 1 st White, sl the long st, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 6: * K 2 sts White, K 3 sts Green, K 2 sts White, sl the long st, K 2 sts White, K 3 sts Rose, K 2 sts White, sl the long st, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 7: Repeat Round 6.
Round 8: * K 3 sts White, K 1 st Green, K 3 sts White, sl the long st, K 3 sts White, K 1 st Rose, K 3 sts White, sl the long st, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 9: Repeat Round 1.
Round 10: Repeat Round 2.
Round 11: Repeat Round 3, reversing Rose and Green, so that designs are in alternating squares.
Round 12: Repeat Round 4, reversing Rose and Green.
Round 13: Repeat Round 5, reversing Rose and Green.
Round 14: Repeat Round 6, reversing Rose and Green.
Round 15: Repeat Round 6, reversing Rose and Green.
Round 16: Repeat Round 8, reversing Rose and Green.
Repeat these 16 rounds for pattern stitch.
Using circular needle and White, cast on 490(512-512) sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts. K round and round until piece measures 1½(2½-5) inches. FIRST DEC ROUND: * K 47(30-30) sts, K 2 tog, repeat from * to end of round—10(16-16) sts dec. K even for 1½(2½-2½) inches. SECOND DEC ROUND: * K 46(29-29) sts, K 2 tog, repeat from * to end of round—10(16-16) sts dec. Continue to dec 10(16-16) sts in same manner every 1½(2½-½) inches, having 1 st less between dec on every dec round, until piece measures 25½(26-26) inches—330(352-368) sts. On the next round dec 10(16-16) sts in same manner. Now join Blue and work even in pattern st until piece meas­ures approximately 31½(32-32) inches, ending with Round 1. Using Blue, on the next round K 9(6-7) sts, * K 2 tog 2(3-3) times, K 1, K 2 tog 3 times, K 1(2-2) sts, repeat from * to end of round. Bind off remaining 190(204-214) sts.

BLOUSE

PATTERN STITCH: Multiple of 16 sts plus 3.
Row 1: Using Blue, knit.
Row 2: Using Blue, P 1, * wrapping yarn 3 times around needle P the next st, P 7, repeat from * ending wrap yarn 3 times around needle and P the next st, P 1.
Row 3: K 1 st White, * sl the next st and drop off 2 extra loops to form a long st, K 3 sts White, K 1 st Green, K 3 sts White, sl the next st and drop off 2 extra loops to form a long st, K 3 sts White, K 1 st Rose, K 3 sts White, repeat from * ending sl 1 st, K 1 st White.
Row 4: P 1 st White, * sl the long st, P 1 st White, P 2 sts Rose, P 1 st White, P 2 sts Rose, P 1 st White, sl the long st, P 1 st White, P 2 sts Green, P 1 st White, P 2 sts Green, P 1 st White, repeat from * ending sl the long st, P 1 st White.
Row 5: K 1 st White, * sl the long st, K 1 st White, K 1 st Green, K 1 st White, K 1 st Green, K 1 st White, K 1 st Green, K 1 st White, sl the long st, K 1 st White, K 1 st Rose, K 1 st White, K 1 st Rose, K 1 st White, K 1 st Rose, K 1 st White, repeat from * ending sl the long st, K 1 st White.
Row 6: P 1 st White, * sl the long st, P 2 sts White, P 3 sts Rose, P 2 sts White, sl the long st, P 2 sts White, P 3 sts Green, P 2 sts White, repeat from * ending sl the long st, P 1 st White.
Row 7: K 1 st White, * sl the long st, K 2 sts White, K 3 sts Green, K 2 sts White, sl the long st, K 2 sts White, K 3 sts Rose, K 2 sts White, repeat from * ending sl the long st, K 1 st White.
Row 8: P 1 st White, * sl the long st, P 3 sts White, P 1 st Rose, P 3 sts White, sl the long st, P 3 sts White, P 1 st Green, P 3 sts White, repeat from * ending sl the long st, P 1 st White.
Row 9: Repeat Row 1.
Row 10: Repeat Row 2.
Row 11: Repeat Row 3, reversing Rose and Green.
Row 12: Repeat Row 4, reversing Rose and Green.
Row 13: Repeat Row 5, reversing Rose and Green.
Row 14: Repeat Row 6, reversing Rose and Green.
Row 15: Repeat Row 7, reversing Rose and Green.
Row 16: Repeat Row 8, reversing Rose and Green.
Repeat these 16 rows for pattern stitch.

BACK: Using Blue and straight needles, cast on 99(115- 115) sts. Work in pattern st, inc 1 st each end of needle every ¾(2-¾) inches 8(3-6) times. Work even on 115 (121-127) sts until piece measures 8(8-8½) inches. SHAPE ARMHOLES: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 7 sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 4(5-5) times. Work even on 93(97-103) sts until armholes measure 7¼(7½-7¾) inches. SHAPE SHOULDERS: At the beg of each of the next 4(4-6) rows bind off 15(16-11) sts. Bind off remaining 33(33-37) sts.

LEFT FRONT: Using Blue and straight needles, cast on 51(51-67) sts. Work in pattern st, omitting Rose and Green design in square at front edge and inc 1 st at arm edge every 6th(4th-10th) row 13(16-4) times. Work even on 64(67-71) sts until piece measures 8(8-8½) inches. SHAPE ARMHOLE: At arm edge bind off 10(10-11) sts. Dec 1 st at same edge every other row 4(5-5) times. SHAPE NECK: Starting at front edge, bind off 20(20-22) sts. Work even on 30(32-33) sts until armhole measures 7¼(7½-7¾) inches. SHAPE SHOULDER: At arm edge bind off 15(16-11) sts 2(2-3) times.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond with left front, reversing all shaping and being sure to omit Rose and Green design in square at front edge, forming a buttonhole in center of each White square at front edge. BUTTONHOLE: Start­ing at front edge, work 4 sts, bind off next 3 sts, work to end of row. On the next row cast on 3 sts over those bound off previous row.

SLEEVES: Using White and straight needles, cast on 80 (84-88) sts. Work in stockinette st for 1 inch. On the next row inc 1 st each end of needle and repeat this inc every ½ inch 4 times more. Work even on 90(94-98) sts until piece measures 4(4¼-4½) inches. SHAPE CAP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 8(8-9) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row for 4¼(4½-4¾) inches. At the beg of each of the next 6 rows bind off 3 sts. Bind off remaining sts.

FINISHING: Using White, work 2 rows s c around bottom edge of skirt. Using Blue, work 2 rows s c around top edge of skirt. Make a beading on inside top of skirt. Sew under­arm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Set in sleeves. Using Blue, work 2 rows s c around front and neck edges. Using White, work 2 rows s c on bottom edge of sleeves. Join blouse and skirt. Block to size. Face fronts with ribbon. Buttonhole st around each buttonhole. Sew on buttons. Sew in shoulder pads. Run elastic, cut to waist measurement, through bead­ing and sew ends. BELT: Using Blue, make a ch 3 inches longer than waist measurement. Work back and forth in s c on this ch for 1 inch. Fasten off. Face belt, folding one end to form a point. Cover buckle with Blue buttonhole st. Sew buckle to belt.
