Coat Pattern

These directions are for small subteen size (8). Changes for medium subteen size (10-12) and large subteen size (14) are in parentheses.

MATERIALS
BERNAT Nylo Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skeins) 9(9-10)
1 pair each straight knitting needles Nos. 5 and 8 OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW
1 steel crochet hook No. 0
1 button

GAUGE: 6 sts = 1 inch

NOTE: This coat has been planned for 37½(39-40½) inch finished length. This length includes 2 inches for stretching. If you wish your coat to be longer or shorter, work more or less inches before first dec.

PATTERN STITCH: Multiple of 4 sts.
Rows 1 and 3: * K 2, bring yarn to front of work and sl 2, throw yarn to back of work, repeat from * across row.
Rows 2 and all even rows: Purl.
Rows 5 and 7: * Bring yarn to front of work and sl 2, throw yarn to back of work and K 2, repeat from * across row.
Row 8: Purl.
Repeat these 8 rows for pattern stitch.

LEFT BACK: Using No. 5 needles, cast on 52(56-60) sts. Work even in stockinette st for 1½ inches, ending with a P row. P the next 2 rows to form hemline. Change to No. 8 needles and work even in pattern st until piece measures 10 inches above hemline, ending with a P row. Dec 1 st at end of next row (arm edge) and repeat this dec every 3 inches 5 times more. Work even on 46(50-54) sts until piece meas­ures 29(30-32) inches above hemline. SHAPE RAGLAN ARMHOLE: At arm edge bind off 2(3-4) sts. Dec 1 st at same edge every other row 30(33-35) times. Bind off re­maining 14(14-15) sts.

RIGHT BACK: Using No. 5 needles, cast on 64(68-72) sts. Work even in stockinette st for 1½ inches, ending with a P row. P the next 2 rows to form hemline. Change to No. 8 needles and work even in pattern st until piece measures 8 inches above hemline, ending with a right side row. At beg of next row (center edge) bind off 12 sts for underlap — 52(56-60) sts. Finish to correspond to left back, reversing all shaping.

LEFT FRONT: Using No. 5 needles, cast on 54(58-62) sts. Work even in stockinette st for 1½ inches, ending with a P row. P the next row to form hemline. Change to No. 8 needles. At beg of next row cast on 21 sts for front band and facing, P to end of row — 75(79-83) sts. Then work as fol­lows: Row 1: Work in pattern st to last 11 sts, sl 1, work last 10 sts (front facing) in pattern st. Row 2: Purl. Continue in pattern as established until piece measures 10 inches above hemline. On next row dec 1 st at arm edge and repeat this dec every 3 inches 5 times more. Work even on 69(73-77) sts until piece measures 29(30-32) inches, ending with same row of pattern st as on back at underarm. SHAPE RAGLAN ARMHOLE: At arm edge bind off 2(3-4) sts. Dec 1 st at same edge every other row 24(27-29) times. SHAPE NECK: Continuing to dec 1 st at arm edge every other row 6 times more, at front edge bind off 25(25-26) sts once and 6 sts 3 times.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond to left front, reversing placing of front band and all shaping and forming first dou­ble buttonhole 1 inch below start of neck shaping. DOUBLE BUTTONHOLE: Starting at front edge, work 2 sts, bind off the next 4 sts, work until there are 4 sts on needle after bound off sts, sl 1, work 4 sts, bind off the next 4 sts, work to end of row. On next row cast on 4 sts over each group of 4 sts bound off previous row.

SLEEVES: Using No. 8 needles, cast on 56(60-64) sts. Work even in pattern st for 4 inches. On next row inc 1 st each end of needle and repeat this inc every 1 inch 6(8-9) times more. Work even on 70(78-84) sts until piece measures 14½(15-16) inches. SHAPE RAGLAN CAP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 2(3-4) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 30(33-35) times. Bind off remaining 6 sts.

CUFFS: Using No. 8 needles, cast on 56(60-64) sts. Work even in pattern st for 4 inches. Bind off.

COLLAR: Using No. 8 needles, cast on 72(76-76) sts. Work even in pattern st for 2½ inches. Bind off.

LEFT POCKET: Using No. 8 needles, cast on 7 sts. Rows 1 and 3: K 2, bring yarn to front of work and sl 2, throw yarn to back of work and K 3. Row 2: Purl. Row 4: P, inc 1 st in last st. Row 5: K 1, * bring yarn to front of work and sl 2, throw yarn to back of work and K 2, repeat from *, ending K 1. Row 6: Repeat Row 2. Row 7: Repeat Row 5. Row 8: Repeat Row 4. Repeat Rows 1 through 8 twice more, forming new patterns as sts are increased — 13 sts. Work even for 3 rows. P next row, dec 1 st at end of row and repeat this dec every 4th row 5 times more. Work even on 7 sts for 4 rows. Bind off.

RIGHT POCKET: Work to correspond to left pocket, revers­ing pattern and all shaping.

FINISHING: Sew underarm seams. Fold under and hem facings at lower and front edges. With right side facing you, work 1 row s c around center back, lower and front edge of each piece. Seam center back, having s c row of left piece overlap s c row of right piece. Sew underlap in place. Sew sleeves to back and front armholes. Sew sleeve seams. With right side facing you, work 1 row s c around side and upper edge of cuffs, inc at corners. Seam cuffs, leaving 1 inch free at top. S c cuffs to sleeves, having opening at outside of sleeves. With right side facing you, work 1 row s c around outer edges of collar. Sew on collar to within ¾ inch of each front edge. With right side facing you, work 1 row s c around each pocket, inc at corners. Sew pockets to fronts 3½ inches from each front edge and at desired height. Block. Finish button­hole. Sew on button.
