MATERIALS
BERNAT BERELLA GERMANTOWN (2 oz. skeins) — 1
1 pair BERNAT-Aero straight knitting needles No. 5 (Canadian Needles No. 9)
OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES THAT WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW

GAUGE: 8 sts = 1 inch; 8 rows = 1 inch

PATTERN STITCH to be worked on designated number of stitches.

Row 1: P 2, * skip next st, K in BACK of next st, K skipped st (K 2 B), P 2, K 2 B; skip next st, K in FRONT of next st, K skipped st (K 2 F), P 2, repeat from *, ending K 2 B, P 2.

Rows 2 and 4: K 2, * skip next st, P next st, P skipped st (P 2 F), K 2, P 4, K 2, repeat from * ending P 2 F, K 2.

Row 3: P 2, * K 2 B, P 2, K 2 F, K 2 B, P 2, repeat from *, ending K 2 B, P 2.

Repeat these 4 rows for pattern stitch.

EARLAPS: Make 2. Cast on 4 sts. Row 1: Sl 1, K 1, P 1, sl 1. Row 2: P 2, K 1, P 1. Row 3: Sl 1, inc 1 st in each of next 2 sts, sl 1. Row 4: P 1, work in seed st, to last st, P 1. Row 5: Sl 1, inc 1 st, work in seed st to last 2 sts, inc 1 st, sl 1. Continue in this manner to inc 1 st each end of earlap every other row until there are 26 sts, ending with a wrong side row. Sl these 26 sts onto a holder.

HELMET: Row 1: Cast on 16 sts for half of back, with right side of one earlap facing you, sl 1, work next 24 sts in seed st, sl 1, cast on 56 sts for front, with right side of other earlap facing you, sl 1 and work next 24 sts in seed st, sl 1, cast on 16 sts for other half of back — 140 sts. Row 2: K 16 sts, P 1, work next 24 sts in seed st, P 1, K 56 sts, P 1, work next 24 sts in seed st, P 1, K 16 sts. Row 3: Work Row 1 of PATTERN STITCH on next 16 sts, put a marker on needle, sl 1, work 24 sts in seed st, sl 1, put a marker on needle, work Row 1 of PAT­TERN STITCH on next 56 sts, put a marker on needle, sl 1, work next 24 sts in seed st, sl 1, put a marker on needle, work Row 1 of PATTERN STITCH on last 16 sts. Row 4: * Work Row 2 of pattern st to marker, work in seed st to next marker, repeat from * once more, work in pattern st to end of row. Work in pattern as estab­lished for 10 rows more. Row 15: * Work in pattern as established to marker, sl next 2 sts, work next st, pass 1 st over worked st, work in seed st to last 3 sts, work 2 sts tog, sl 1, repeat from * once more, work in pattern to end of row — 2 sts dec on each earlap. Continue to dec 2 sts on each earlap every other row until 3 sts remain on each earlap, ending with a right side row. On next row work in pattern as established, knitting the 3 sts of each earlap. SHAPE TOP: Row 1: * Work next 19 sts in seed st, put a marker on needle *, repeat between *'s once, work next 18 sts in seed st, put a marker on needle, repeat between *’s twice more — 94 sts. Row 2: Work even in seed st. Row 3: Sl 1, work 1, psso, * work in seed st to 2 sts before next marker, work 2 tog, sl 1, work 1, psso, repeat from * 3 times more, work in seed st to last 2 sts, work 2 tog. Row 2: Work even in seed st. Repeat these two rows 7 times more — 14 sts. Break off yarn, leaving a 12 inch end.

FINISHING: Pull end through remaining sts and draw up tightly. Sew back seam. STRAP: Pick up 4 sts at end of earlap and knit in garter st until piece measures 6 inches. K 2 sts tog twice. Bind off. Make other strap in same manner. Steam.
