REQUIREMENTS:

YARN: 4-ounces of 4-ply Knitting Worsted

NEEDLES: 1-pr. #3 for small size, 1-pr #4 for medium size, 1-pr #5 for large size

RIGHT MITTEN: Cuff: Cast on 43 sts and work as fol-lows: ROW 1: P 1, k 1, p 2, k 4, p 2, k 1, p 2, k 4, p 2; k 1, p 1 over the remaining 24 sts. ROW 2: Work ribbing over the first 24 sts; k 2, p 4, k 2, p 1, k 2, p 4, k 2, p 1, k 1. Repeat these 2 rows, once more. ROW 5: P 1, k 1, p 2, slip the next 2 sts onto a dble pt needle and hold in back of work, knit the next 2 sts, knit the 2 sts off the dble pt needle (cable twist); p 2, k 1, p 2, make a cable twist on the next 4 sts, p 2; work in ribbing to end of row. ROW 6: Repeat row 2. Repeat these 6 rows for the pattern. Work until you have completed row 6 after the 4th cable twist. Next row: K 2, p 2, k 4, p 2, k 1, p 2, k 4, p 2, knit to end of row. Next row: P 24 sts, k 2, p 4, k 2, p 1, k 2, p 4, k 2, p 2. Repeat last 2 rows once more.

THUMB INCREASES: K 2, p 2, make a cable twist on next 4 sts, p 2, k 1, p 2, make a cable twist on next 4 sts, p 2, k 2, inc. 1 st in next st, k 1 inc. 1 st in next st, knit to end of row. Work back as sts are. (Note: Keep the pattern on the 17 sts until you come to the tip decreases). 2nd inc: Work over 21 sts, inc. 1 st in next st, k 3, inc. 1 st in next st, knit to end of row. Work back as sts are. 3rd inc: Work over 21 sts, inc. 1 st in next st, k 5, inc. 1 st in next st, knit to end of row. Work back sts as they are. 4th inc: Work over 21 sts, inc. 1 st in next st, k 7, inc. 1 st in next st, knit to end of row. Work back as sts are. 5th inc: Work over 21 sts, inc. 1 st in next st, k 9, inc. 1 st in next st, knit to end of row. Work back as sts are. 6th inc: Work over 21 sts, inc. 1 st in next st, k 11, inc. 1 st in next st, knit to end of row. Work back as sts are.

THUMB: Work over 21 sts, place onto a st holder; knit 15 sts and leave on the needle; place the remaining 19 sts onto a 2nd st holder. Cast on 1 st at end of the 15 sts; turn and purl across these sts; cast on 1 st (17 sts). Work on these sts in stockinette stitch for 2 inches. 1st dec: * k 2 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Purl back. 2nd dec: * k 1, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. 3rd dec: Purl 2 sts together across row. Break yarn leaving 7 inches. Thread a darning needle and draw through the sts. Fasten off tightly on wrong side. Sew up thumb.

HAND: Place the sts off the first st holder onto a needle, tie yarn in, pick up and knit 3 sts on base of thumb, knit the sts off 2nd st holder. Keeping the pattern work until the mitten measures (3½ inches—small size): (3¾ inches—medium size); (4 inches—large size); above the place where you picked up the 3 sts on base of thumb.

TIP DECREASES: 1st dec: * k 5 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Purl next row. 2nd dec: * k 4 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Purl next row. 3rd dec: * k 3 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Purl next row. 4th dec: * k 2 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Purl next row. Last dec: Knit 2 sts together across row. Break yarn, leaving 14 inches. Finish as tip of thumb. Sew side seam.

LEFT MITTEN: Cast on 43 sts and work as follows: P 1, k 1 over 24 sts, p 2, k 4, p 2, k 1, p 2, k 4, p 2, k 1, p 1. 2nd row: K 1, p 1, k 2, p 4 ,k 2, p 1, k 2, p 4, k 2, work remaining 24 sts in ribbing. Work to correspond to the right mitten. When time to start the thumb increases: K 19 sts, inc. 1 st in next st, k 1, inc. 1 st in next st, work to end of row. Work remainder of mitten to correspond to the right one.
