REQUIREMENTS:

YARN: 2-ounces of Knitting Worsted.

NEEDLES: 1-pr. #3 Single Pointed.

RIGHT MITTEN.					4-yr.	6-yr.	8-yr.
With the #3 needles cast on					32 sts	42 sts	44 sts
Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for					2 ins	2 ins	2 ½ ins
Now work in stockinette stitch for					4 rows	4 rows	4 rows
THUMB INCREASES: Always done on a knit row. Purl 1 row between each of the following increases.
	4-yr.	6-yr.	8-yr.
1st inc:	K 16	K 18	K 20	inc. 1 st, k 1; inc. 1 st: knit	14 sts	16 sts	18 sts
2nd inc:	K 16	K 18	K 20	inc. 1 st; k 3; inc. 1 st; knit	14 sts	16 sts	18 sts
3rd inc:	K 16	K 18	K 20	inc. 1.st; k 5; inc. 1 st; knit	14 sts	16 sts	18 sts
4th inc:	K 16	K 18	K 20	inc. 1 st; k 7; inc. 1 st; knit	14 sts	16 sts	18 sts
5th inc:	K 16	K 18	K 20	inc. 1 st; k 9; inc. 1 st; knit	14 sts	16 sts	18 sts
6th inc:	none	none	K 20	inc. 1 st; k 11; inc. 1 st; knit			18 sts
Purl 1 row after last increase.
THUMB SEPARATION: Knit and place onto a stitch holder					16 sts	18 sts	20 sts
Knit and leave on the knitting needle					10 sts	10 sts	12 sts
Place the remaining sts onto a 2nd st holder. Cast on 1 st at the end of these thumb sts; turn and purl across. Cast on 1 st.
Work on these sts in stockinette stitch for					1 ¼ in	1 ½ in	1 ¾ in
Next knit row-ALL SIZES: Knit 2 sts together across the row. Break yarn leaving 7 ins. Thread a darning needle and draw thru the sts and fasten tightly on the wrong side. Sew up thumb.
Place the sts from the first st holder, back onto needle					16 sts	18 sts	20 sts
Tie yarn in the first st, pick up and knit along thumb					3 sts	3 sts	3 sts
Knit sts from the 2nd st holder. Work on these sts until the work measures the following inches above the ribbing					3 ins.	3 ½ ins	4 ins.
1st dec: (for 8-yr. old only)-* K 5 sts, k 2 tog, repeat from * across row. P 1 row. 2nd dec: (all sizes) * K 4, k 2 tog, repeat from * across row. Purl 1 row. 3rd dec: (all sizes) * K 2, k 2 tog, repeat from * across row. Purl 1 row. Knit 2 sts together across next row. Break yarn, leaving 10 inches. Finish off as the thumb top. Sew up the side of the mitten. LEFT MITTEN: Cast on the sts and do the cuff the same way. Reverse the instructions for the increases and then work the rest of the mitten the same way.
