Youngster's Fair Isle Socks

SIZES

4 years (length, 7 inches, foot 6 ½ inches);
6 years (length, 7 ½ inches, foot 7 ½ inches).

MATERIALS

Three-ply fingering yarn: 1 ounce white and 1 ounce blue.
Knitting needles, 1 pair No. 2 [No. 3]; 1 set (4) double-pointed needles, No. 2 [No. 3].

GAUGE

8 ½ [8] stitches = 1 inch.

With white yarn and single-pointed needles, cast on 48 stitches, Work in ribbing of knit 1, purl 1 for 72 inch. Break off white, attach blue. Continue in ribbing for 1 inch more. Increase 1 stitch at end of last row (49 stitches).

Work 2 rows in stockinette stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row), then start pattern. Attach white. 1st row: Knit 1 white, * knit 1 blue, knit 1 white. Repeat from * across. 2nd row: Purl 1 white, * purl 1 blue, purl 1 white. Repeat from * across. 3rd row: With blue, knit across. 4th row: Purl 4 blue, * purl 1 white, purl 7 blue. Repeat from * to within last 5 stitches, purl 1 white, purl 4 blue. Starting with 5th row, follow chart until 20th row has been completed, working the extra stitch (not shown on chart) in main color at beginning of all knit rows and at end of all purl rows. Break off white. Continue in stockinette stitch with blue until work measures 5 ¼ [5 ¾] inches from beginning, ending with a purl row. Next row: Knit 12 and slip them on a stitch holder, then knit across next 25 stitches, turn. Place remaining 12 stitches on another stitch holder.

INSTEP

Continue in stockinette stitch on center 25 stitches for 4 ½ [5 ½] inches, ending with a purl row. Break off blue and slip stitches on a stitch holder.

HEEL

With right side facing, arrange the 2 sets of 12 stitches each from holders on 1 needle and attach white. 1st row: * Slip 1, knit 1. Repeat from * across. 2nd row: Purl across. Repeat last 2 rows 10 times more.

TO SHAPE HEEL

1st row: Knit 16, knit 2 together, turn. 2nd row: Purl 9, purl 2 together, turn. 3rd row: Knit 9, knit 2 together, turn. Repeat last 2 rows until 10 stitches remain, ending with a purl row. Next row: Knit 10, then pick up and knit 11 stitches across one side of heel. Following row: Purl across, then pick up and purl 11 stitches across other side of heel. Next row: Knit 1, slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch, knit to within last 3 stitches, knit 2 together, knit 1. Following row: Purl across. Repeat last 2 rows until 24 stitches remain.

FOOT

Work even in stockinette stitch until foot measures the same as instep, ending with a knit row, Do not break off.

TO SHAPE TOE

Arrange all stitches of instep and foot on 3 double-pointed needles (1st needle = instep: 25 stitches; 2nd and 3rd needles: 12 stitches each). Work in rounds.

1st round: 1st needle: Knit 1, slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch, knit 8, knit 2 together, knit 9, knit 2 together, knit 1. 2nd needle: Knit 1, slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch, knit to end. 3rd needle: Knit to within last 3 stitches, knit 2 together, knit 1.

2nd round: Knit around.

3rd round: 1st needle: Knit 1, slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch, knit to within last 3 stitches, knit 2 together, knit 1. 2nd needle: Knit 1, slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch, knit to end. 3rd needle: Knit to within last 3 stitches, knit 2 together, knit 1. Repeat last 2 rounds until 20 stitches remain. Break off, leaving an 18 inch end. Join stitches with Kitchener Stitch. Join leg and instep seams.
