Materials:
Chadwick's Red Heart Crepe-de-Mode, 10 skeins (1 oz. skeins).
Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 2 (2¾ mm. size).
3 buttons.
A belt.

Gauge: 8 sts make 1 inch (12 sts, 1 complete pattern, make 1½ inches); 11 rows make 1 inch.

Back. Starting at bottom, with No. 2 needles cast on 126 sts and work in moss st (on one row k 1, p 1, alternately; on next row, p over k sts and k over p sts) for 6 rows, increasing 1 st at both ends of last row. 7th row: K 3, * O, k 2 tog., k 10. Repeat from * across, ending row with O, k 2 tog., k 3. 8th row: K 1, p across, ending row with k 1. 9th row: K 3, * k 2 tog., O, k 10. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 2 tog., O, k 3. 10th row: K 1, p across, ending row with k 1. Repeat these last 4 rows until piece measures 4½ inches. Then, inc. 1 st at both ends of next row and every 8th row thereafter until there are 142 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 12 inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 4 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 110 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 6½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 2 sts at beginning of each row until 38 sts remain. Bind off. Front. Work as for Back up to armhole shaping.

To Shape Armholes: With wrong side of work toward you, bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 4 rows. On next row, work in pattern across 1st 59 sts, then (k 1, p 1) 3 times, k 1, turn (thus starting front opening). Hereafter, work over these 66 sts only, keeping the 7 sts at center front opening in moss st and decreasing 1 st at armhole edge every other row 4 times (62 sts); at the same time, when front opening measures ¾ inch, make a buttonhole 2 sts in from front edge on next row, and every 2 inches thereafter, until 3 buttonholes in all are made. (To make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 5 sts; then on next row, cast on 5 sts to replace those bound off.) Work straight until piece measures 5½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Then, starting at front edge, bind off 7 sts (thus starting neck shaping) and continue across. Hereafter, dec. 1 st at neck edge every other row but, when piece measures 6½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, shape shoulder by binding off 2 sts at armhole edge every other row until all sts are worked off. Break off. Attach yarn at base of opening, cast on 7 sts and work opposite side to correspond, omitting buttonholes.

Sleeves. Starting at bottom, cast on 52 sts and work in moss st for 3 inches. Next row: K 1, * O, k 2 tog., k 10. Repeat from * across, ending row with O, k 2 tog., k 1. 2nd row: Inc. in 1st st, p across, inc. in last st. 3rd row: K 2, * k 2 tog., O, k 10. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 2 tog., O, k 2. 4th row: K 1, p across, ending row with k 1. These 4 rows constitute the pattern. Repeat these 4 rows, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 6th row until there are 102 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 17 inches. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 8 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of every 4th row until 70 sts remain. Then bind off 2 sts at beginning of each row until 20 sts remain. Bind off.

Collar. Cast on 90 sts and work in moss st for 6 rows. Hereafter, continue to work in pattern, keeping the 5 sts at both ends in moss st. Work straight for 3½ inches. Bind off.

Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Sew collar to neck edge, having the center front bands extend beyond edges of collar. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
