These 8 rows constitute the pattern. Repeat these 8 rows, decreasing 1 st at both ends of every 4th row, until 82 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 5 inches. Then inc. 1 st at both ends of next row and every 4th row thereafter until there are 100 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 11 inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 76 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each row until 34 sts remain. Bind off.

Right Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 60 sts and work in pattern as for Back, decreasing 1 st at underarm side every 7th row 5 times (55 sts); at the same time, when piece measures 1 inch, make a buttonhole 5 sts in from front edge on next row and 2 inches thereafter until 2 buttonholes are made. (To make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 4 sts; then, on next row, cast on 4 sts to replace those bound off.) Work straight until piece measures 5 inches. Then, on next row and every 8th row thereafter, inc. 1 st at underarm side 3 times; at the same time, when piece measures 3 inches from the last buttonhole made, make another buttonhole as before on next row and 2 inches thereafter (4 buttonholes in all). Work straight until piece measures 9 inches. Then inc. 1 st at both ends of next row and every 4th row until 8 sts are increased at front edge and 6 sts are increased at underarm side (72 sts). Work straight until piece measures 13 inches.

To Shape Armhole: Starting at armhole edge, bind off 7 sts. Then dec. 1 st at armhole edge every other row until 50 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 7½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Then, starting at front edge, bind off 9 sts and continue across. At beginning of next row (armhole edge) bind off 5 sts once, and 4 sts every other row 4 times, at the same time binding off 10 sts at front edge every other row twice.

Left Front. Work exactly as for Right Front, omitting buttonholes.

Sleeves. Starting at bottom, cast on 44 sts and work in pattern, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 7th row until there are 78 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 17 inches. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 20 sts remain. Bind off. Work a row of s c around all edges of Jacket.

Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
