COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. "SPEED-CRO-SHEEN" MER­CERIZED COTTON, Art. C.44: 5 (5-6) balls of No. 126 Spanish Red, and
J. & P. COATS "KNIT-CRO-SHEEN" METALLIC, Art. A.64: 11 (13-15) balls of No. M.68 Skipper Blue.
Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 4 (3½ mm. size).

A 7-inch Coats & Clark's Crown "Trouble-Free" Zipper, Style F.11 for neck openings.

NOTE: When working with "Knit-Cro-Sheen" Metallic, use Metallic thread double throughout.

GAUGE: 5½ sts make 1 inch; 11 rows make 1 inch.

BACK … Starting at lower edge with Red, cast on 84 (90-96) sts. Work in garter st (k each row) for 1½ inches. Drop Red, attach 2 strands of Skipper Blue Metallic (or 1 strand of Skipper Blue Knitting Worsted) and work in stripe pattern as follows: 1st to 4th rows incl: With Skipper Blue k across. Drop Skipper Blue, pick up Red. 5th and 6th rows: With Red k across. The last 6 rows constitute the stripe pattern. Continue to work in stripe pattern, decreas­ing 1 st at both ends of next row and every 6th row thereafter until there remain 70 (76-82) sts. Work without decreasing until piece measures 7 inches in all. Continue to work in pattern, increasing 1 st at both ends of next row and every 5th row thereafter until there are on needle 82 (88-94) sts. Work without increasing until piece measures in all 10½ (11½-11½) inches.

To Shape Dolman Sleeves: Inc 1 st at both ends of next row and every row thereafter until there are on needle 104 (110-116) sts. Cast on 19 sts at the end of the next 2 rows. There are on needle 142 (148-154) sts. Continue to work in pattern, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 5th (6th-7th) row, until there are on needle 160 (164-170) sts. Work 4 (5-1) rows without increasing.

To Shape Top of Sleeves and Shoulders: Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of the next 40 (46-46) rows. Bind off 4 (7-7) sts at the beginning of the next 10 (6-2) rows. Bind off 6 (— -8) sts at the beginning of the next 2 (— -4) rows. Bind off remaining 28 (30-32) sts for back of neck.

FRONT … Work exactly as for Back until piece measures 10½ (11½-11½) inches, ending with same stripe as on Back at underarm.

To Shape Dolman Sleeve: 1st row: Inc 1 st at begin­ning of row, knit 37 (40-43) sts, place the last 39 (42-45) sts just worked on a stitch holder to be worked later, bind off 6 sts for neck opening, knit across remaining sts, increasing 1 st at end of row. Working over the last set of sts only, inc 1 st at side edge on every row until there are on needle 49 (52-55) sts. Cast on 19 sts at side edge once. There are on needle 68 (71-74) sts. Now inc 1 st at same edge as before (sleeve edge) every 5th (6th-7th) row, 9 (8-8) times, then work 4 (5-1) rows without increasing, ending at sleeve edge,

At the Same Time

when neck opening measures 2 inches, shape neck as follows: Dec 1 st at neck edge on next row and every 8th (9th-9th) row thereafter at same edge 11 (12-13) times. Work in this manner until piece is same length as Back to Top of Sleeve Shaping, ending at sleeve edge.

To Shape Top of Sleeve and Shoulder: Still decreasing 1 st at neck edge as before, bind off 2 sts at sleeve edge every other row 20 (23-23) times. Then bind off 4 (7-7) sts at shoulder edge every other row 5 (3-1) times. Bind off 6 (— -8) sts at same edge every other row 1 (— -2) times.

Attach thread (or yarn) to neck opening and work to correspond with other side, reversing shapings.

COLLAR … Starting at center back of collar with Skipper Blue, cast on 36 sts. K 2 rows. Attach Red and k 2 rows, drop Red, pick up Skipper Blue and k 4 rows. Continue to work in stripe pattern as for Back until piece measures 2½ (2¾-2¾) inches.

To Shape Collar: Continuing to work in stripe pat­tern, cast on 6 sts at the end of next row and every other row 6 (9-9) times in all. On Size 10 only, cast on 7 sts at same edge every other row 2 times. On all sizes, k 1 row. Next row: K across. Following row: K across, with Red cast on 12 sts for tab. There are on needle 98 (102-102) sts. Place these sts on a stitch holder to be worked later for border. With Skipper Blue and right side of Collar facing, pick up and knit 36 sts along the center back edge of Collar. Work in pattern to correspond with other side of Collar, revers­ing shapings and having same number of stripes and rows until there are on needle 98 (102-102) sts.

BORDER … With Red only and double-pointed needles, knit 98 (102-102) sts on first needle, place a marker at end of needle, with second needle pick up and k along the lower edge of Collar 44 (48-48) sts, place a marker on needle, with third needle knit 98 (102-102) sts from stitch holder. 1st row: Knit 97 (101-101) sts, inc 1 st in next st, slip marker, inc 1 st in next st, knit 42 (46-46) sts, inc 1 st in next st, slip marker, inc 1 st in next st, knit 97 (101-101) sts. 2nd row: K across. 3rd row: K across, increasing 1 st before and after each marker at both corners. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately 2 times more. Bind off.

Block pieces to measurements. Sew sleeve and shoulder seams. Sew right side seam. Sew left side seam, leaving 7 inches free at bottom for zipper. Make a row of sc along side seam opening. Sew in zipper. Sew collar in place, having the tabs at lower edge overlapping. Sew lower edge of tabs in place at neck opening.
