Size 1

MATERIALS:
CHADWICK'S RED HEART BABY POMPADOUR, 3 balls (1 oz. balls).
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 2 (2¾ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 5 (4 mm. size).
4 small buttons.

GAUGE: 6 sts make 1 inch; 8 rows make 1 inch.

RIGHT FRONT … With No. 2 needles cast on 55 sts. 1st row: K 4 (for front border), p 1, (k 1, p 1) alternately across. 2nd row: K 1, (p 1, k 1) alternately across to within last 4 sts, k 4. Repeat these 2 rows alternately, making a buttonhole 2 sts in from front edge after the first ½ inch and again when piece measures 1¼ inches—to make a buttonhole, on one row k 2 tog., O; on next row work O as a st. Continue until piece measures 1½ inches, ending at underarm edge. Change to No. 5 needles and work in pattern as follows:
1st row: (Wrong side) * K 3, p 1. Repeat from * to 7 sts from end of row, k 7. 2nd row: K across. 3rd row: K 1, * p 1, k 3. Repeat from * to 6 sts from end of row, p 1, k 5. 4th row: K across. Repeat these 4 rows for pattern, decreasing 1 st inside front border on next row and every other row thereafter until 31 sts remain. Piece should measure 8 inches in all. Cast on 36 sts at underarm edge (sleeve). Continue in pattern, making front decreases as before until 59 sts remain. Now dec. 1 st inside front border each row until 50 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 11½ inches in all, ending last row at neck edge. Lay this piece aside on a stitch holder.

LEFT FRONT … Work to correspond with Right Front, making buttonholes in band and ending at sleeve edge. Be sure that the last row of pattern corresponds with last row on Right Front. Do not bind off, but continue as follows:

BACK … K across sts of Left Front, cast on 23 sts for back of neck and, starting at neck edge, k across 50 sts on stitch holder (123 sts in all). Next row: Work in pattern across 46 sts, k 31 for garter-stitch band at neck, work in pattern across remaining 46 sts. Repeat last row 3 more times. Now work in pattern across 123 sts until piece measures 7 inches from cast-on sts for sleeve. Bind off 36 sts at beginning of next 2 rows (thus completing sleeves). Following row: Work in pattern over remaining 51 sts for 6½ inches. Change to No. 2 needles and work in ribbing for 1½ inches. Bind off in ribbing.

WRIST BANDS … With right side facing, using No. 2 needles, pick up 48 sts along outer edge of sleeve. Work in ribbing for 1½ inches. Bind off in ribbing.
Sew up underarm and sleeve in one continuous seam. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. Press through damp cloth.
