"Boye" Crochet Hook, Size 3.

GAUGE: BASKET-WEAVE PATTERN — 6 stitches = 1 inch; 8 rows = 1 inch

Each Cable-Stitch Strip should meas­ure about 3½ inches in width.

BASKET-WEAVE STRIPS—Make 6—With color A, cast on 29 sts and k 1 row. Row 1 of pattern—K 4, p 5, k 11, p 5, k 4. Row 2—K 9, p 11, k 9. Row 3—Same as row 1. Row 4—Same as row 2. Row 5—Same as row 1. Row 6—K all sts. Row 7—K 12, p 5, k 12. Row 8—K 4, p 8, k 5, p 8, k 4. Row 9—Same as row 7. Row 10—Same as row 8. Row 11—Same as row 7. Row 12—K all sts. These 12 rows make the basket-weave pattern; repeat them 43 times, then repeat the first 6 rows of pattern once more (strip should measure about 67 inches in length). Bind off.

CABLE-STITCH STRIPS—Make 5—With color B, cast on 26 sts. Row 1 of cable pattern—K 4, p 2, k 6, p 2, k 6, p 2, k 4. Row 2—K 6, p 6, k 2, p 6, k 6. Row 3—Same as row 1. Row 4—Same as row 2. Row 5 (cable-twist row)—K 4, p 2, * slip the next 3 stitches to the crochet hook, keeping the hook with the slipped sts back of work, k the next 3 sts, then k the 3 slipped sts, p 2; repeat from * once, k the last 4 sts. Row 6—Same as row 2. Row 7—Same as row 1. Row 8—Same as row 2. Re­peat these 8 rows 66 times (536 rows). Bind off.

With care to have ridges meet, sew strips together alternating colors as illustrated.

FRINGE—With matching color, wind yarn around a 2½ inch cardboard. Cut at one end. Tie a 2-strand fringe in every other st along top and bottom of Afghan. Trim edges evenly. Block to size.
