Cardigan and Knickers for 9 to 12 Months Pattern

MATERIALS:
The charm of the youngest gentleman will be truly enhanced when he wears this little outfit. The cardigan with raglan sleeves is smartly double breasted and the knickers have a knit-in gusset for a smooth fit. The original test garments were knitted with Beehive Fingering 3 ply Patonised and other test models were made with Patwin 3 ply Patonised. Be sure to make one of the specified yarns your choice for these instructions in order to be satisfied with your knitting. You will need:—5 ozs. If made separ­ately, the Cardigan requires 3 ozs. Knickers 2 ozs. Two No. 12 and two No. 10 Queen Bee Knitting Needles. 6 Buttons.

MEASUREMENTS: Cardigan—To fit 19½ -20 inch Chest. Length from top of shoulder 10 ins. Sleeve seam 6½ ins. Knickers—Length at center front 8½ ins. Width all round above gusset 21 ins.

Tension: 8 sts. and 10 rows = 1 inch with No. 10 needles.

THE CARDIGAN

The Cardigan is worked in one piece to armholes.
With No. 12 needles cast on 175 sts.

Before proceeding, please read "Important Information" on patternbook page.

1st row: K3. (P2. K2) 4 times. P2. *K1. P1. Repeat from * to last 22 sts. K1. P2. (K2. P2) 4 times. K3.

2nd row: K1. (P2. K2) 5 times. *P1. K1. Repeat from * to last 22 sts. P1. (K2. P2) 5 times. K1.

3rd row: K1. (P2. K2) 4 times. P2. K3. *P1. K1. Repeat from * to last 23 sts. P1. K3. P2. (K2. P2) 4 times. K1.

4th row: K3. (P2. K2) 4 times. P3. *K1. P1. Repeat from * to last 23 sts. K1. P3. (K2. P2) 4 times. K3.
These 4 rows make 21 sts. in block pattern at each front edge with (K1. P1) ribbing between. Repeat these 4 rows once.

9th row: (buttonholes). As 1st. row to last 22 sts. K1. P2. K2. (w.r.n. P2tog. for 1st. buttonhole). (K2. P2) twice. K2. (w.r.n. P2tog. for 2nd buttonhole). K3.

Repeat 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows then 1st. to 4th rows inclusive. (16 rows in all).
Change to No. 10 needles.
Keeping 21 sts. in block pattern at each front edge as before, but remaining sts. in Stocking st. work 16 rows even ending with purl row.
Working buttonholes on next and following 24th row, continue even in this pattern until 7 rows have been worked above 3rd pair of buttonholes thus ending with 4th row of block pattern. Work now measures approx. ins. from beginning when knitted to correct tension.

Next row: K3. (P2. K2) 4 times. P2. K24. Cast off 8 sts. for under­arm. K69. Cast off 8 sts. for underarm. K24. P2. (K2. P2) 4 times. K3.

Working on last 45 sts. proceed:—

To make Left Front: 1st row: Work 21 sts. in pattern. Purl to last st. K1.
2nd row: K1. Sl.1. K1. p.s.s.o. Knit to last 21 sts. Work in pattern to end of row.
Repeat these 2 rows to 22 sts. on needle ending with 1st. row of block pattern.
Work in pattern to armhole edge. Break wool and leave these sts. on a thread.

To make Back: With wrong side of work facing, join wool to next 69 sts.
1st row: K1. Purl to last st. K1.
2nd row: K1. Sl.1. K1. p.s.s.o. Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1. Repeat these 2 rows to 23 sts. on needle ending with purl row. Break wool and leave these sts. on a thread.

To make Right Front: With wrong side of work facing, join wool to remaining 45 sts.
1st row: K1. Purl to last 21 sts. Work in pattern to end of row.
2nd row: Work 21 sts. in pattern. Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1. Repeat these 2 rows to 22 sts. on needle ending with 1st. row of block pattern.
Work in pattern to front edge. Proceed:—

To make back of Collar: With right side of work facing, work in pattern across sts. of Right Front. Working across sts. of Back, K10. K2tog. K11. Work in pattern across sts. of Left Front. (66 sts. on needle).
Work 8 rows in pattern. Cast off in pattern.

SLEEVES: With No. 12 needles cast on 40 sts. Work 16 rows (K1. P1) ribbing. Change to No. 10 needles.
Next row: K3. *Inc. 1.st. in next st. K7. Repeat from * 3 times.. Inc. 1.st. in next st. K4. (45 sts. on needle).
Beginning with purl row, continue in Stocking st. inc. 1.st. each end of needle every 6th and 8th rows alternately to 57 sts. on needle.
Continue even until sleeve measures 6½ ins. from beginning, or desired length, ending with purl row.

To shape cap: Cast off 4 sts. beginning next 2 rows.
3rd row: K1. Sl.1. K1. p.s.s.o. Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1.
4th row: K1. Purl to last st. K1.
Repeat 3rd and 4th rows to 5 sts. on needle ending with purl row.
Next row: K1. Sl.1. K2tog. p.s.s.o. K1. Turn. P3tog. Fasten off.

TO MAKE UP: Press pieces carefully. Sew shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves. Sew buttons to correspond to buttonholes.

THE KNICKERS

If making these Knickers for size 6 months, use No. 12 needles for ribbed portions as given, but No. 11 needles in place of No. 10 needles and work to produce tension of 8½ sts. and 10 rows =1 inch in Stocking st. with the No. 11 needles. The finer tension will thus make them a little smaller.

BACKTo make 1st. legband: With No. 12 needles cast on 41 sts.
1st row: K2. *P1. K1. Repeat from * to last st. K1.
2nd row: K1. *P1. K1. Repeat from * to end of row.
Repeat these 2 rows of (K1. P1) ribbing for 10 rows in all. Break wool and leave these sts. on spare needle.
Make 2nd legband to correspond but do not break wool.
Change to No. 10 needles and proceed:—

1st row: Knit the 41 sts. of 2nd legband. Cast on 22 sts. for gusset.
Knit the 41 sts. of 1st. legband (104 sts. on needle).
2nd and alternate rows: K1. Purl to last st. K1.
3rd row: K40. Sl.1. K1. p.s.s.o. K20. K2tog. K40.
5th row: K40. Sl.1. K1. p.s.s.o. K18. K2tog. K40.
7th row: K40. Sl.1. K1. p.s.s.o. K16. K2tog. K40.
Continue in Stocking st. decreasing for gusset in this manner by having 2 sts. less between decreasings every knit row to 82 sts. on needle, ending with knit row.

Next row: K1. P39. P2tog. P39. K1. (81 sts. on needle). Continue even in Stocking st. until work measures 7¼ ins. measured up center from the cast-on sts. of gusset, ending with purl row.

To shape back: 1st row: Knit to last 8 sts. Turn.
2nd row: Slip 1st. st. Purl to last 8 sts. Turn.
3rd row: Slip 1st. st. Knit to last 16 sts. Turn.
4th row: Slip 1st. st. Purl to last 16 sts. Turn.
5th row: Slip 1st. st. Knit to last 24 sts. Turn.
6th row: Slip 1st. st. Purl to last 24 sts. Turn.
7th row: Slip 1st. st. Knit to last 32 sts. Turn.
8th row: Slip 1st. st. Purl to last 32 sts. Turn.
9th row: Slip 1st. st. Knit to end of row.
10th row: K1. Purl to last st. K1.

**Change to No. 12 needles and work 8 rows (K1. P1) ribbing as given for 1st. legband.
Next row: (eyelets). K2. *Wl.fwd. K2tog. Repeat from * to last st. K1.
Rib 4 rows. Cast off loosely in ribbing.**

FRONT: Work exactly as given for Back until work measures 7¼ ins. from the cast-on sts. of gusset, ending with purl row, then work from ** to ** as given for Back.

TO MAKE UP: Press pieces carefully. Sew side, gusset and leg- band seams. For the cord, using wool double, crochet a chain 34 ins. long. Darn in ends. Thread through eyelets at waist. If de­sired, a length of elastic, cut to required size, may be used in place of the cord.
