Bumble Bee Pillow Pattern

Materials Required:
AMERICAN THREAD "AUNT LYDIA'S" HEAVY RUG YARN
4—70 yd. skeins Black
1—70 yd. skein Buttercup
1 Pr. Knitting Needles Nos. 8 and 13 OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL RESULT IN STITCH GAUGE BELOW
Black Lining Material 18 x 22 inches
Shredded Foam Rubber or Kapok Black Pipe Cleaners

GAUGE for No. 13 needles: 3 sts = 1 inch

With Buttercup and No. 8 needles cast on 30 sts. K 3 rows, cut yarn. ** Attach Black, * K 1, yo, repeat from * across row (this is the inc row)—59 sts. Change to No. 13 needles, K 9 rows, drop Black. Attach Buttercup and with No. 8 needles K 2 tog across row ending with K 1 (this is the dec row)—30 sts. K 3 rows, cut yarn. Repeat from ** 6 times, cut yarn leaving a length. Thread into blunt needle and draw through all sts tightly. Sew seam matching stripes leav­ing an opening to insert pillow. FINISHING: Fold lining in half lengthwise. Sew seams leaving one end open. Draw tog at other end. Fill with Kapok or shredded foam rubber. Draw end tog and sew opening closed. Insert lining in pillow. Sew opening closed. WINGS: (Make 2). With No. 8 needles and Black cast on 9 sts, K 3 rows. NEXT ROW: * K 1, yo, repeat from * across row ending K 1 (inc row) - 17 sts. NEXT 19 ROWS: With No. 13 needles K each row. NEXT ROW: With No. 8 needles K 2 tog across row ending K 1-9 sts. NEXT 7 ROWS: K each row. NEXT ROW: Repeat inc row-17 sts. NEXT 19 ROWS: With No. 13 needles K each row. NEXT ROW: With No. 8 needles K 2 tog across row ending K 1—9 sts. NEXT 3 ROWS: K each row. Bind off. Fold in half, sew side seam matching rows. Work a run­ning st across tip of wing to shape. Cut cardboard in shape of wings and insert in place. Sew seam on other side to match. Sew wings securely in place to body.

TIP OF TAIL: Wind Buttercup around a 3 inch cardboard 35 times, slip off cardboard and tie in center, cut each end. Trim slightly to a point. Set pompon aside. Wind the remainder of But­tercup around a 5 inch cardboard for head section, slip off card­board, tie in center. Trim and fasten to end of pillow. Wind Black around pipe cleaner or wire starting at one end and wind to center, cut yarn leaving an end. Cover other end of pipe cleaner in same manner, tie to center of face. Bend covered pipe cleaner in shape as illustrated. Wind re­mainder of Black around a 5 inch cardboard leaving a length for tying. Slip off cardboard, tie in center. Tie the small Buttercup pompon to center of Black pom­pon, then tie both pompons tog tightly. Cut and trim to shape. Fasten securely to other end of pillow. With "Star" Mercerized Sewing Thread tack pillow to lin­ing along Buttercup stripes to hold in place.
