Size 12 Years

Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Shetland Floss, 6 balls (1 oz. balls).
Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size), and 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size).
7 buttons.

Gauge: 7 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch.

Work starts at bottom of Back, is worked up to the shoulders and continued down the Front in two pieces (Left and Right Fronts).

Back. Starting at bottom, with No. 1 needles cast on 98 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 2 inches. Then change to No. 3 needles and work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row), keeping the 1st 2 sts and the last 2 sts in garter st, until piece measures 10 inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 9 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then work straight in stockinette st only until piece measures 5½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Then, to shape neck, on next k row, k across 1st 24 sts, bind off 32 sts (for back of neck), k across remaining 24 sts.

Left Front. Work over these last 24 sts for ½ inch. Then change to No. 1 needles and work in garter st (k each row) for ½ inch. Change to No. 3 needles and work in stockinette st for ½ inch, ending with a p row. Then cast on 19 sts (for front of neck). Hereafter work in stockinette st straight over these 43 sts, keeping the 7 sts at center front edge in garter st, until piece measures 5½ inches from 19 sts cast on. Then cast on 9 sts at armhole edge (52 sts in all), and continue to work Front as for Back, keeping the 7 sts at center front edge in garter st. Bind off.

Right Front. Attach yarn at neck edge on opposite shoulder, and work to correspond with Left Front, reversing armhole and neck shapings, at the same time making a buttonhole 3 sts in from center front edge after the 2nd inch, and every 2½ inches thereafter until 6 buttonholes are made. (To make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 4 sts; then, on next row, cast on 4 sts to replace those bound off.)

Sleeves. With right side of work toward you, starting at beginning of 9 sts bound off for armhole shaping, with No. 3 needles pick up 88 sts across armhole to corresponding position on other side. Work in stockinette st for 1 inch. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of next row and every 5th row thereafter until 48 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 13 inches measuring along underarm seam. Then change to No. 1 needles and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 2 inches. Bind off.

Neck Band. Starting at center front edge, with right side of work toward you, and with No. 1 needles pick up 90 sts all around neck edge, and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 1 inch, making a buttonhole as before after the 1st ½ inch on right side. Bind off loosely.

Sew up underarm and sleeve seams. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
