Materials: 4 Skeins KENTUCKY ALL PURPOSE YARN—1 Pair Number 8—10" Knitting Needles, 1 Set Number 3 Sock Needles.

Gauge: 5 sts = 1 inch; 5 rows = 1 inch.

Back of Sweater—Size 32.

Band: Cast on 68 sts. K 2, P 2 for 3". Then Knit a row and Purl a row until work measures 8" above the band.

Armhole: Cast off 4 sts on each side. (The first 4 sts will be cast off on a knit row; the second 4 sts will be cast off on a purl row.) Then knit 2 sts tog at the beginning and end of knit row for the next two knit rows, making a total of 6 sts cast off on each armhole. There will be 56 sts left on the needle. Continue to knit a row and purl a row on 56 sts to the top of the shoulder—6". (Measure straight up from where the 4 sts were cast off—using a measuring stick.)

Shoulder: Bind off 4 sts on each armhole end 4 times for the shoulder, making a total of 16 sts taken off on each shoulder. (On one end the binding off will be on the knit side; on the other end it will be on the purl side.) This leaves 24 sts on the needle for the back of the neck. Bind off the neck sts on the knit side and pull yarn thru last loop to fasten.

Front of Sweater

Band: Cast on 68 sts. K 2, P 2 for 3". Knit a row and Purl a row on 68 sts for 8". Then bind off for armhole, binding off 4 sts on each side. (On one end bind off on the knit side; on the other end bind off on the purl side.) On the next two knit rows knit first 2 and the last 2 sts tog, leaving 56 sts on the needle. Continue to knit a row and purl a row on 56 sts for 4" (measuring on measuring stick from point where first 4 sts were bound off.)

Neck: On knit row knit 23 sts, then bind off 10 sts, and knit across the row. (This leaves 23 sts on each side of the 10 sts cast off for neck opening.) Purl back to neck opening. Attach another ball to other side of neck opening and purl across. Knit 2 tog on knit rows on each side of neck opening until there are 16 sts left on each side of neck opening. Continue to knit a row and purl a row until armhole measures same as back, then bind off 4 sts (on armhole side) at beginning of each knit and purl row until you have bound off 16 sts on each shoulder. Now bind off remaining sts. The finish will be on the neck side. Now sew the 2 shoulders together with back sts matching the 4 sts on each shoulder.

Neckband: With a crochet hook, beginning at right shoulder, pick up 28 sts for back of neck, and 26 sts for each side of neck, placing these 3 groups on 3 sock needles (80 sts in all). With the 4th sock needle K 1, P 1, around the neck, and continue to do this until the neckband measures 1 inch, then bind off and fasten the yarn. Sew in the end.

Sleeves: Cast on 46 sts, K 1 and P 1 until the band measures 1 inch. Then add 10 sts evenly across the row and knit a row and purl a row until it measures 2 inches above the band. Bind off 3 sts on each side of the sleeve, after which knit 2 tog at beginning and end of each knit row until there are 22 sts left on the needle. Bind off on knit side. Sew up sleeves and sew them into the armholes.
