Size: Infants to 6 months
REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: 4-ounces of 3-ply Baby Yarn
NEEDLES: 1-pr. #3 Single pointed.
CROCHET HOOK: 1 # 3 steel hook.
TRIMMING SILK: 1-ball.
GAUGE: 8-sts to an inch.
PATTERN: Row 1: Knit 72 sts. Row 2: Knit 52 sts, turn. Row 3: Knit 52 sts. Row 4: Knit 62 sts, turn. Row 5: Knit 62 sts. Row 6: Knit 72 sts. Row 7: Knit 72 sts. Row 8: Knit 52 sts, turn. Row 9: Purl 46 sts, knit 6 sts. Row 10: Knit 62 sts, turn. Row 11: Knit 10 sts, purl 46 sts, knit 6 sts. Row 12: Knit 72 sts. Repeat these 12 rows for the pattern.
SWEATER: (Starting at the left front edge). Cast on 72 sts and work in the above pattern until the piece measures about 5 inches at the lower edge (widest part); ending with the 6th row of the pattern completed. Sleeve: Starting the 7th row, knit 24 sts; place the remaining 48 sts onto a stitch holder; cast on 48 sts for the sleeve. ** Knit 52 sts, turn; knit 42 sts - leaving 10 sts for the cuff -, turn; knit 52 sts, turn; knit 62 sts, turn; knit 72 sts, turn; knit 72 sts, turn; repeat from ** until the upper arm of the sleeve measures 6-inches, (widest part). Starting from the cuff and on a 72-knit row, bind off the first 48 sts; knit the remaining 24 sts. NEXT ROW: Knit 24 sts, knit the 48 sts off the st holder. Beginning with Row 8 of pattern, continue working in the pattern until the piece measures 10-inches from the sleeve bind off, ending with Row 12 completed.
SECOND SLEEVE: Knit 24 sts (from neck edge); place the remaining 48 sts onto a stitch holder; cast on 48 sts for sleeve. Beginning with **’s, make this sleeve the same as the first one. After the sleeve bind off start the RIGHT FRONT: Knit 24 sts, knit 48 sts from stitch holder; beginning with row 2 of pattern, complete front to correspond to the left front. Bind off all sts after front is completed. Break yarn.
FINISHING: Sew sleeve seams. Neck edge: Tie yarn at the corner of the right front at neck edge, using the #3 hook make a chain of 4; * skip 1 ridge, make 1 d c in next ridge, ch 2, repeat from * across neck edge. Break yarn.
Trimming in yoke and sleeve cuffs: Using the silk in two strands crochet a chain long enough to run through the cuff as in illustration. Do the same at the yoke. Trim neck edge with ribbon.
BONNET: Using the #3 needles, cast on 96 sts. Knit 10 rows. Beading row: K 1, * yarn over, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Now knit 10 rows more. Work in the pattern as follows: Rows 1 to 8 inclusive: Knit every row. Row 9: Purl across row. Row 10: Knit across row. Row 11: Purl across row. Row 12: Knit across row. Repeat these 12 rows until the piece measures about 5 ½-inches, ending with row 1. From now on work in garter stitch (knit every row). 1st dec: * Knit 6 sts, k 2 together; repeat from * across row. Knit next row. 2nd dec: * K 10 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Knit 1 row. 3rd dec: * K 9 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Knit 1 row. 4th dec: * K 8 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Knit 1 row. 5th dec: * K 7 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Knit 1 row. 6th dec: * K 6 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Knit 1 row. 7th dec: * K 5 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Knit 1 row. 8th dec: * K 4, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Knit 1 row. 9th dec: * K 3 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Knit 1 row. 10th dec: * K 2 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Knit 1 row. 11th dec: * K 1 st, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Knit 1 row. Last dec: K 2 sts together across row. Break yarn leaving 9 inches. Draw thru the remaining sts and fasten tight on the wrong side. Sew up garter stitch and ½-inch beyond. Fold back 1-inch at the front of bonnet, leaving the beading row along front edge, tack down at sides. NECK BAND: With the right side of the work facing you, pick up and knit 56 sts around the neck edge. Knit 3 rows. Next row: K 1, * yarn over, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row, ending with yarn over, k 2 tog, k 1. Knit 4 rows. Bind off all sts loosely. Trim with silk and ribbon as in illustration.
BOOTIES: Using the # 3 needles, cast on 44 sts and work in the pattern as on the bonnet until the piece measures about 2 ½-inches in all, ending with row 11. Beading row: K 1, * yarn over, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row, ending with yarn over, k 2 tog, k 1. Knit across next row. Instep: Knit 15 sts; place these sts onto a st holder; knit the next 14 sts and leave on the needle; place the remaining 15 sts onto a 2nd st holder. On the 14 sts, knit every row for 19 rows. Break yarn. Place the sts off the first st holder onto a free needle; tie yarn in at the first stitch, pick up and knit 10 sts along side of instep, knit 14 sts; pick up and knit 10 sts along 2nd side of instep, knit 15 sts off 2nd st holder (64 sts). Knit 5 rows. 1st dec: K 2 tog, k 21, k 2 tog, k 14, k 2 tog, k 21, k 2 tog. Knit 3 rows. 2nd dec: K 2 tog, k 19, k 2 tog, k 14, k 2 tog, k 19, k 2 tog. Knit 4 rows. Bind off all sts. Sew up sole and back of bootie. Trim with Ribbon.
