MATERIALS: Beehive Scotch Fingering Yarn, Patonised Shrink-resist Finish, 3 Ply (1 oz. skeins): Size 12 — 20 skeins of Pearl Grey; Size 14 — 22 skeins; Size 16 — 24 skeins ... Royal Society Alumi­num or Plastic Knitting Needles, 1 pair No. 2 (2¾ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 7 (4½ mm. size) ... Royal Society Plastic Crochet Hook No. 2 ... 9-inch Crown Zipper (dress placket) ... A belt buckle ... 8 buttons ... 2 yards grosgrain ribbon. 1 inch wide.

GAUGE: 8 sts measure 1 inch; 10 rows measure 1 inch.

BODICE

Back ... Starting at lower edge with No. 2 knitting needles, cast on 108 (116, 124) sts. Work in stockinette st, knit 1 row, purl 1 row, increasing 1 st at both ends every ½ inch until piece measures 2 inches, ending with a purl row. There are on needle 116 (124, 132) sts.

Change to No. 7 knitting needles and work in pattern as follows: 1st row: * Knit into back of 2nd st on left-hand needle but do not slip it off. knit into back of first st on left-hand needle and slip both sts off needle at one time. Repeat from * across. 2nd row: Sl 1 st as if to purl, * purl 2nd st on left-hand needle, but do not slip it off, purl first st on left-hand needle and slip both sts off needle at one time. Repeat from * across to last st, then p 1. 3rd to 10th rows incl: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows, increasing 1 st at both ends of 5th and 10th rows — to keep continuity of pattern, when there is an odd number of sts, slip first st on a knit row, but do not slip on a purl row.

Change to No. 2 knitting needles and work in stockinette st for 2 inches, ending with a purl row, increasing 1 st at both ends of one row every ½ inch. There are on needles 128 (136, 144) sts.

Change to No. 7 knitting needles and work in pattern as before for 10 rows, increasing 1 st at both ends on the 5th and 10th rows. There are on needle 132 (140, 148) sts. Change to No. 2 knitting needles and work in stockinette st without increasing until piece measures 6½ (6¾, 7) inches in all.

Cast on at the beginning of next 2 rows for sleeves 124 (128, 132) sts. There are on needle 380 (396, 412) sts. Continue in stockinette st, increasing 1 st at both ends of one row every ½ inch 6 times (cuff edge).

At the Same Time

when piece measures 2 inches from last pattern row, ending with a purl row change to No. 7 knitting needles and work in pattern for 10 rows. Change to No. 2 knitting needles and work in stockinette st until cuff edge measures 4½ (4¾, 5) inches.

To Shape Sleeves: Bind off 5 sts at the beginning of each row

At the Same Time

when piece measures 2 inches from last pattern row, ending with a purl row change to No. 7 knitting needles and work 10 rows in pattern, continuing 10 bind off 5 sts at the beginning of each row. Change to No. 2 knitting needles and work in stockinette st. binding off 6 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows, and 5 sts at the beginning of each row until there remain 120 (136, 152) sts.

To Shape Shoulders: Bind off 8 (9, 10) sts at the beginning of next 8 rows. Bind off 10 (11, 12) sts at the beginning next 2 rows. Bind off remaining 36 (42, 48) sts for back of neck.

LEFT FRONT ... Starting at lower edge with No. 2 knitting needles, cast on 73 (77, 81) sts. Work in stockinette st and in pattern as for Back, increasing 1 st at side edge on one row every ½ inch, until there are on needle 85 (89, 93) sts. Work without increasing until piece measures 6½ (6¾, 7) inches in all, ending with a purl row. Cast on at the beginning of next row for sleeve 124 (128, 132) sts. There are on needle 209 (217, 225) sts. Continue to work in pattern as for Back, increasing 1 st at cuff edge on one row every ½ inch 6 times. Work without increasing until cuff edge measures 4½ (4¾, 5) inches, ending at cuff edge.

To Shape Sleeve: Bind off 5 sts at the beginning of next row and every other row until stockinette st measures 2 inches from last row of pattern. Change to No. 7 knitting needles and work 10 rows in pattern, continuing to bind off 5 sts at sleeve edge on next row and every other row.

Change to No. 2 knitting needles and work in stockinette st, binding off 6 sts at sleeve edge on next row (with right side facing). Bind off 5 sts at sleeve edge every other row until there remain 79 (87, 95) sts,

At the Same Time

when piece measures 14½ (14¾, 15) inches in all, ending at front edge, shape neck as follows: Bind off at beginning of next row (neck edge) 26 (29, 32) sts. Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of next purl row. Decrease 1 st at neck edge at the beginning of each purl row 9 times. Continue to bind off at sleeve edge until there remain 42 (47, 52) sts, ending with a purl row.

To Shape Shoulder: Bind off 8 (9, 10) sts at shoulder edge on next row and every other row 4 times. Bind off remain­ing 10 (11, 12) sts.

RIGHT FRONT ... Work as for Left Front, reversing shapings and making a set of buttonholes when piece measures 2½ inches and every 1½ inches thereafter until 8 sets of button­holes in all are made — to make a set of buttonholes on a pattern row, k 4, bind off 2 sts, k 12, bind off 2 sts; on next row cast on 2 sts to replace each set of the 2 sts bound off; on knit row k 4, bind off 3 sts, k 10, bind off 3 sts; on next row cast on 3 sts to replace each set of the 3 sts bound off.

COLLAR ... Starting at outside edge, cast on 112 (116, 120) sts. Work in stockinette st for ½ inch, ending with a knit row. Next row: Knit across (hemline). Continue in stockinette st until piece measures 2 inches from hemline. Bind off 12 sts at the beginning of next 8 rows. Bind off.

Block to measurements. Sew side, shoulder and sleeve seams, leaving 5 inches free at lower edge of left side for zipper. Turn facing to wrong side, matching buttonholes, and sew in place. Sew buttonholes together in buttonhole st. Turn hem of collar to wrong side and sew in place. Turn narrow hems at narrow edges of collar and sew in place. Sew on collar. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. Turn narrow hems at cuffs and sew. Sew snap fasteners at neck edge. With crochet hook sl st in each st around lower edge.

SKIRT

BACK ... Starting at lower edge with No. 2 knitting needles, cast on 248 (256, 264) sts. Work in stockinette st for 1 inch, ending with a knit row. Next row: Knit across (hemline). Continue in stockinette st until piece measures 1½ inches from hemline, ending with a purl row.

1st decrease row: K 33 (37, 41), * k 2 tog, k 34. Repeat from * 4 more times, k 2 tog. k 33 (37, 41). Work without decreas­ing until piece measures 3 inches from hemline, ending with a purl row. 2nd decrease row: K 33 (37, 41), * k 2 tog, k 33. Repeat from * 4 more times, k 2 tog, k 32 (36, 40). Work without decreasing until piece measures 4 inches from hem­line, ending with a purl row.

Change to No. 7 knitting needles and work next 10 rows in basket pattern as for Back. Change to No. 2 knitting needles and work in stockinette st, decreasing on next row as fol­lows: 3rd decrease row: K 32 (36, 40), * k 2 tog, k 32. Repeat from * 4 more times, k 2 tog, k 32 (36, 40). Work without decreasing for 1 inch, ending with a purl row. 4th decrease row: K 32 (36, 40), * k 2 tog, k 31. Repeat from * 4 more times, k 2 tog, k 31 (35, 39). Work without decreasing until stockinette section measures 2 inches, ending with a purl row.

Change to No. 7 knitting needles and work in basket pat­tern for next 10 rows. Change to No. 2 knitting needles and work in stockinette st, decreasing on next row as follows. 5th decrease row: K 31 (35, 39), * k 2 tog, k 30. Repeat from * 4 more times, k 2 tog, k 31 (35, 39). Continue to work in this manner, alternating 10 rows of basket pat­tern with No. 7 knitting needles and 2 inches of stockinette st with No. 2 knitting needles and decreasing on the first and 11th rows of stockinette st as follows: 6th decrease row: K 31 (35, 39), * k 2 tog, k 29. Repeat from * 4 more times, k 2 tog, k 30 (34, 38). 7th decrease row: K 30 (34, 38), * k 2 tog, k 28. Repeat from * 4 more times, k 2 tog, k 30 (34, 38). 8th decrease row: K 2 tog, k 28 (32, 36), * k 2 tog, k 27. Repeat from * 4 more times, k 2 tog. k 27 (31, 35), k 2 tog. 9th decrease row: K 28 (32, 36), * k 2 tog, k 26. When 7 stripes of basket pattern are completed, with No. 2 knitting needles work in stockinette st only, decreasing on first row and on one row every inch as follows: 15th decrease row: K 22 (26, 30), * k 2 tog, k 20. Repeat from * 4 more times, k 2 tog, k 22 (26, 30). 16th decrease row: K 2 tog, k 20 (24, 28), * k 2 tog, k 19. Repeat from * 4 more times, k 2 tog, k 19 (23, 27), k 2 tog. 17th decrease row: K 2 tog, k 19 (23, 27), * k 2 tog, k 18. Repeat from * 4 more times, k 2 tog, k 17 (21, 25), k 2 tog. 18th decrease row: K 2 tog, k 17 (21, 25), * k 2 tog, k 17. Repeat from * 4 more times, k 2 tog, k 16 (20, 24), k 2 tog. 19th decrease row: K 2 tog, k 16 (20, 24), * k 2 tog, k 16. Repeat from * 4 more times, k 2 tog, k 11 (18, 22), k 2 tog. 20th decrease row: K 2 tog, k 14 (18, 22), * k 2 tog, k 15. Repeat from * 4 more times, k 2 tog, k 13 (17, 21), k 2 tog. Work without decreasing until piece measures 30½ (30½, 31) inches. Bind off.

BELT ... Cast on 14 sts and work in stockinette st for length desired. Bind off.

Buttonhole st closely around buckle. Make a chain 2 inches long, sl st in each ch across (tab). Break off. Block to measurements. Sew side seams, leaving 4 inches free at top of left side. Turn hem to wrong side and sew in place. Sew skirt to bodice. Turn narrow hem at zipper opening and sew in place. Sew in zipper. Cut ribbon to waist measurement and sew to wrong side at waist. Sew ribbon along center of belt, shaping one end to a point. Turn long edges of belt to wrong side and sew in place. Sew buckle to belt. Sew on tab near buckle.
