MATERIALS: Beehive Scotch Fingering Yarn, Patonised Shrink-resist Finish, 3 Ply (1 oz. skeins): Size 12 — 22 skeins of Tartan No. 1310; Size 14 — 24 skeins; Size 16 — 26 skeins ... Royal Society Aluminum or Plastic Knitting Needles, 1 pair No. 2 (2¾ mm. size) ... Royal Society Plastic Crochet Hook No. 1 ... 1 yard grosgrain ribbon ... 7-inch Crown Zipper (skirt placket).

GAUGE: 8 sts measure 1 inch; 10 rows measure 1 inch.

BOLERO

BACK ... Starting at lower edge, cast on 116 (124, 132) sts. Work in stockinette st, knit 1 row, purl 1 row, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 6th row until there are on needle 138 (146, 154) sts. Work without increasing, until piece measures 7¾ (8¼, 8¾) inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 8 (9, 10) sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Decrease 1 st at end of each row until there remain 108 (112, 116) sts. Work without decreasing until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping 7¾ (8, 8) inches.

To Shape Shoulders: Bind off 4 sts at the beginning of next 4 rows. Bind off 4 sts at the beginning of next row, 1 st remains on right hand needle, knit the next 28 sts. Bind off next 26 (30, 34) sts for back of neck, knit to end of row. Work across the last 33 sts only. Bind off 4 sts at the begin­ning of next row and every other row 3 times

At the Same Time

bind off 2 sts at neck edge on next purl row, then decrease 1 st at neck edge on the following purl row. Bind off 6 sts at armhole edge every other row 3 times. Attach yarn to other side of neck edge and work other side to correspond, reversing shapings.

LEFT FRONT ... Cast on 10 (14, 18) sts. Work in stockinette st, increasing 1 st at side edge every 6th row 7 times,

At the Same Time

cast on 5 sts at the beginning of each purl row 5 times (front edge). Cast on at front edge every other row 4 sts once, 3 sts twice, 2 sts 3 times. Then increase 1 st at front edge every other row 4 times. Now increase 1 st at front edge every 3rd row until there are on needle 66 (70, 74) sts, increasing at side edge once more.

Increase 1 st at front edge every 4th row 4 times; then increase 1 st at front edge every 3rd row 22 times

At the Same Time

when piece measures 7¾ (8¼, 8¾) inches, ending at side edge, shape armhole by binding off 8 (9, 10) sts at armhole edge on next row. Decrease 1 st at armhole edge every other row 7 (8, 9) times.

Work without decreasing at armhole edge but still continue to increase at front edge as before, if necessary work with­out increasing until piece measures 7¼ (7¾, 7¾) inches from first row of armhole shaping, ending at front edge.

To Shape Neck: Bind off 16 sts at the beginning of next row and bind off 8 sts at beginning of neck edge on next purl row. Then at opposite end start shaping shoulder by bind­ing off 4 sts at shoulder edge every other row 5 times and 6 sts at shoulder edge every other row 3 times

At the Same Time

bind off at neck edge every other row 8 sts once, 4 sts once, 2 sts once, then decrease 1 st every other row 2 (4, 6) times.

RIGHT FRONT ... Work as for Left Front, reversing shapings.

LEFT FRONT FACING ... Starting at lower edge, cast on 10 (14, 18) sts and purl 1 row, cast on 5 sts at the beginning of next row and at same edge (front edge) every other row 5 times.

Cast on at same edge every other row 4 sts once, 3 sts once, then at opposite edge (side edge) bind off 10 (14, 18) sts at the beginning of next row; on next row cast on 3 sts at front edge, bind off 5 sts at side edge every other row 5 times

At the Same Time

cast on 2 sts at front edge every other row 4 times in all — 18 sts on needle. Work over these 18 sts, increasing 1 st at front edge every other row and decreasing 1 st at opposite edge every other row until piece measures 4 inches from the beginning.

Increase 1 st at front edge every 3rd row 14 (15, 16) times

At the Same Time

increase 1 st at opposite edge every 8th row 11 times. Now increase 1 st at front edge every 6th row 8 (9, 10) times. There are on needle 51 (53, 55) sts. Work without increas­ing until piece measures same as front to neck shaping, ending at neck edge. Shape neck same as front. Bind off remaining sts.

RIGHT FRONT FACING ... Work as for Left Front facing, revers­ing shapings.

BACK FACING ... Cast on 116 (124, 132) sts. Work in stockinette st for 15 rows. Bind off.

SLEEVES ... Starting at cuff cast on 64 (64, 68) sts. Work 7 rows in stockinette st. Next row: Knit across (hemline). Continue in stockinette st, increasing 1 st at both ends of the 7th row and every 6th row thereafter until there are 108 (108, 112) sts on needle. Work without increasing until piece measures 17 (17½, 18) inches in all.

To Shape Top: Bind off 8 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Decrease 1 st at end of each row until there remain 72 (72, 76) sts. Decrease 1 st at both ends of every 4th row until there remain 52 (52, 56) sts. Decrease 1 st at end of each row until there remain 46 (46, 44) sts. Bind off 6 sts at the beginning of next 4 rows. Bind off remaining 22 (22, 20) sts.

COLLAR ... Starling at center back cast on 10 sts. Next row: Purl across. Work in stockinette st, casting on 5 sts at beginning of next 10 rows. Cast on 20 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. There are 100 sts on needle. Work without increasing until piece measures 2½ inches, ending with a knit row. Next row: Knit across (hemline). Work in stocki­nette st until piece measures 1½ inches from hemline. Bind off 20 sts at beginning of next 2 rows, then bind off 5 sts at the beginning of each row until 10 sts remain. Bind off.

Block to measurements. Sew side, shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves. Turn hem of cuffs to wrong side and sew in
place. With crochet hook make a row of sc closely around outer edges and facings. Pin facings to Bolero. With crochet hook make sc closely around outer edges through both thicknesses, turn and sl st in each sc around. Join and break off. Sew facings in place on wrong side. Fold collar in half and sew in place.

SKIRT

BACK ... Starting at lower edge, cast on 205 (213, 221) sts. Work in stockinette st for 7 rows. Next row: Knit across (hemline). Continue in stockinette st until piece measures 3 inches from hemline.

1st decrease row: K 25 (29, 33), * k 2 tog, k 49. Repeat from * 2 more times, k 2 tog, k 25 (29, 33). Work without decreasing for 2½ inches, ending with a purl row. 2nd decrease row: Knit across, decreasing 4 sts evenly spaced. Repeat 2nd decrease row every 2 inches, twice, then every 1½ inches, 7 times, and every 1 inch twice. Work without decreasing until piece measures 23 inches in all. Decrease 4 sts evenly spaced on next row and every 6th row 8 times in all. Then decrease 4 sts in same manner every 4th row 6 times in all. Work without decreasing until piece measures 30½ inches from hemline. Bind off remaining 97 (105, 113) sts.

FRONT ... Starting at lower edge, cast on 264 (272, 280) sts. Work in stockinette st for 7 rows. Next row: Knit across (hemline). Work in stockinette st until piece measures 12 inches from hemline. Next row: Decrease 4 sts evenly spaced. Work without decreasing until piece measures 16½ inches from hemline. On next row decrease 4 sts evenly spaced. Work without decreasing until piece measures 23 inches from hemline, ending with a purl row. Decrease 4 sts evenly spaced on next row. Following row: Purl across.

PLEATS ... K 44 (48, 52), sl 1, k 14, p 2, k 28, p 2, k 14, sl 1, k 40, sl 1, k 14, p 2, k 28, p 2, k 14, sl 1, k 44 (48, 52). Keeping the center 164 sts as established, decrease 2 sts evenly spaced across each 44 (48, 52) sts, every 1½ inches until there remain 236 (244, 252) sts. Work without decreas­ing until piece measures 30½ inches from hemline. Bind off.

BELT ... Cast on 20 sts. Work in stockinette st for length desired. Bind off.

Sew up side seams of Skirt, leaving 7 inches free at left side for zipper. Turn hem of skirt to wrong side and sew in place. Turn in small hem at zipper opening and sew zipper in place. Make two box pleats at front, folding each set of 2 sl st rows over to center of knit panels. Press pleats (2 pleats). Sew grosgrain ribbon to wrong side of belt, shaping one end to a point. Sew on belt, leaving 1 inch free at each end. Sew on snap fasteners.
