MATERIALS
BERNAT Boucle de Laine—21(22-23) balls Grey
BERNAT Beada—3 spools Silver
1 pair straight knitting needles No. 2 (standard)
1 24 inch circular knitting needle No. 2 (standard)
1 steel crochet hook No. 5
1 yd elastic 7 buttons
1 yd each of 1 inch and 2 inch grosgrain ribbon
1 pair shoulder pads
1 belt buckle

GAUGE: 8 sts = 1 inch; 12 rows = 1 inch

SKIRT

SHIRRING PATTERN
Round 1: Using Silver, knit.
Round 2: Using Silver, purl.
Round 3: Using Grey, knit.
Round 4: Using Grey, knit, increasing 1 st in each st to end of round.
Rounds 5 through 26: Using Grey, knit.
Round 27: Using Grey, * K 2 tog, repeat from * to end of
round.
Round 28: Using Grey, knit.
Round 29: Repeat Round 1.
Round 30: Repeat Round 2.
Repeat these 30 rounds for a complete pattern wherever specified.

NOTE: Any changes in length of skirt are made before first dec round.

Using circular needle and Grey, cast on 540(560-580) sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts. K round and round for 1 inch. P the next round to form hemline. K round and round until piece measures 1(2-2) inches above hemline. FIRST DEC ROUND: K 25(26-27) sts, K 2 tog, repeat from * to end of round—20 sts dec. K round and round for 1 inch. SECOND DEC ROUND: * K 24(25-26) sts, K 2 tog, repeat from * to end of round—20 sts dec. K round and round for 1 inch. On the next round dec 20 sts in same manner as before, having 1 st less between dec. K round and round on 480(500-520) sts for 1 inch. Now work 30 rounds of shirring pattern. K round and round until piece measures 8(9-9) inches. On the next round, dec 20 sts in same manner as before and repeat this dec round every 1 inch twice more. Work even on 420(440-460) sts for 1 inch. Now work 30 rounds of shirring pattern. K round and round until piece measures 15(16-16) inches. On the next round dec 20 sts in same manner as before and repeat this dec round every 1 inch twice more. Work even on 360(380-400) sts for 1 inch. Now work 30 rounds of shirring pattern. K round and round until piece measures 22(23-23) inches. On the next round dec 20 sts in same manner as before and repeat this dec round every 1 inch twice more. Work even on 300(320-340) sts for 1 inch. Now work 30 rounds of shirring pattern. K round and round until piece measures 29(30-30) inches. On the next round dec 20 sts in same manner as before and repeat this dec round every ½ inch 3(4-4) times more—220(220-240) sts. ON SIZE 14 ONLY, work even for ½ inch. On the next round dec 10 sts at even intervals. ON ALL SIZES, work even ½ inch. Bind off remaining 210(220-240) sts.

BLOUSE

BACK: Using straight needles, cast on 110(116-124) sts. Work in stockinette st, inc 1 st each end of needle every ¾ inch 9(10-10) times. Work even on 128(136-144) sts until piece measures 8(8-8½) inches. SHAPE ARMHOLES: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 7(8-9) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 5 times. Work even on 104(110—116) sts until armholes measure 7¼(7½-7¾) inches. SHAPE SHOULDERS: At the beg of each of the next 10(8-6) rows bind off 7(9-13) sts. Bind off remaining 34(38-38) sts.

LEFT FRONT: Using straight needles, cast on 63(66-70) sts. Work in stockinette st, inc 1 st at arm edge every ¾ inch 9(10-10) times. Work even on 72(76-80) sts until piece measures 8(8-8½) inches. SHAPE ARMHOLE: At arm edge bind off 10(11-11) sts. Dec 1 st at same edge every other row 6(6-7) times. Work even on 56(59-62) sts until armhole measures 1¼(1½-1¾) inches. SHAPE NECK: At front edge bind off 8 sts. Work even on 48(51-54) sts until armhole measures 5¼(5½-5¾) inches. At front edge bind off 7(9-9) sts once and 2 sts 3 times. Work even on 35(36-39) sts until armhole measures 7¼(7½-7¾) inches. SHAPE SHOULDER: At arm edge bind off 7(9-13) sts 5(4-3) times.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond with left front, forming first buttonhole when piece measures 2 inches. BUTTON­HOLE: Starting at front edge, work 2 sts; bind off next 4 sts; work to end of row. On the next row cast on 4 sts over 4 sts bound off previous row. Work 6 more button­holes, evenly spaced, to ½ inch below start of neck shaping.

SLEEVES: Using straight needles, cast on 56(60-64) sts. Work even in stockinette st for 2 inches. On the next row inc 1 st at each end of needle and repeat this inc every ¾ inch until there are 98(104-108) sts. Work even until piece measures 17½(18-18) inches. SHAPE CAP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 10(11-11) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row for 4¼(4½-4¾) inches. At the beg of each of the next 6 rows bind off 3 sts. Bind off remaining sts.

PATTERN FOR COLLAR AND CUFFS
Row 1: Using Grey, purl.
Rows 2 and 3: Using Silver, knit.
Row 4: Using Grey, knit.
Row 5: Using Grey, purl, inc 1 st in each st to end of row.
Rows 6 through 27: Using Grey, work in stockinette st.
Row 28: Using Grey, * P 2 tog, repeat from * to end of row.
Rows 29 and 30: Using Silver, knit.
Row 31: Using Grey, knit.
These 31 rows form complete pattern for collar and cuffs.

COLLAR: Using straight needles and Grey, cast on 116(118-120) sts. Work 31 rows of pattern as specified. Bind off.

CUFFS: Make 2. Using straight needles and Grey, cast on 60(64-68) sts. Work 31 rows of pattern as specified. Bind off.

BELT: Using crochet hook and Grey, make a 30(32-34) inch chain. Row 1: Using Grey, work 1 s c in second ch from hook, work 1 s c in each ch to end of row, ch 1, turn. Rows 2   and 3: Using Silver, work 1 s c in each s c to end of row, ch 1, turn. Rows 4 and 5: Using Grey, repeat Row 2. Rows 6 and 7: Repeat Row 2. Rows 8 and 9: Repeat Row 2. Fasten off.

FINISHING: Hem skirt. Using crochet hook and Grey, work 3 rows s c around top of skirt. Work a beading on inside waistline. Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Set in sleeves. Using Grey, work 2 rows s c on front edge and neck of blouse. Sew ends of cuffs tog and then sew cuffs to bot­tom sleeve edges. Sew collar in place. Using Grey, work 1 row s c along outer edges of collar and cuffs. Block skirt and blouse. Run elastic, cut to waist measurement, through beading and sew ends tog. Face each front with 2 inch rib­bon. Buttonhole st around each buttonhole. Sew buttons in place on left front. Sew skirt and blouse tog, being sure to have front underlap buttoned. Sew in shoulder pads. Face belt with 1 inch ribbon. Using Silver, buttonhole st over belt buckle and sew to end of belt. Fold other end of belt to form a point.
