MATERIAL:

3 skeins Knitting Worsted m.c. (4 oz. skein)
1 skein Knitting Worsted c.c. (4 oz. skein)
1 pair knitting needles No. 8
1 bone crochet hook No. 6
28 flat button moulds 1 inch diameter

GAUGE: 9 sts. = 2 inch

PATTERN:

1st row: * K 6, P 1, K 1, P 1 repeat from * across row, end K 6

2nd row: P across row

Repeat these 2 rows for pattern throughout the entire stole.

With m.c. and No. 8 needles cast on 87 sts. Work in pattern for 2 inch. Now work a polka-dot as follows:

1st row: * K 2 m.c., attach a strand of c.c., K 2 c.c., drop c.c., pickup m.c. carrying it loosely in back, K 2, P 1, K 1, P 1, K 6, P 1, K 1, P 1, repeat from * across row

2nd row: P 10 m.c., drop m.c., * pick up c.c., P 4 c.c., drop c.c., pick up m.c. carrying it loosely in front of 4 c.c. sts., P 14 m.c. repeat from * across row

3rd row: K 1 m.c., * drop m.c., pick up c.c. K 4 c.c., drop c.c., pick up m.c. carrying it loosely across back of 4 c.c. sts., K 1, P 1, K 1, P 1, K 6, P 1, K 1, P 1, K 1, repeat from * across row

4th row: Work like 2nd row

5th row: Work like 1st row

Break c.c. Work 2 inch. in m.c. and pattern. Then reverse dots and put them in the other K 6 section. Cont. to work this way having a polka-dot in every other K 6 section and reverse the polka-dot every 2 inch. until stole measures 64 inch. Bind off loosely. With m.c. and No. 6 crochet hook work 1 row s.c. around the entire stole, working 3 s.c. in each corner st.

TRIMMING:

Cover the button moulds with c.c. as follows: With No. 6 crochet hook ch. 3, join to a ring. Work 6 s.c. in ring.

1st row: Work 2 s.c. in each st.

2nd row: * 1 s.c. in next st., 2 s.c. in next st. repeat from * across round

3rd row: Work 1 s.c. in each st. all round.

Fasten off, leaving a 4 inch end. Thread a tapestry needle and run the thread through the last row, insert button mould and pull yarn together, fasten off tightly. Cover 28 buttons moulds in this manner.

Attach m.c, on short end of stole on right hand corner, 1 s.c. in corner st. * ch, 7, 1 s.c. in center of covered mould, ch. 7, skip 5 sts. on stole, 1 s.c. in next st. repeat from * to end of row. Fasten off. Work other short end of stole to correspond. Steam lightly.
