Repeat from * around — carrying free yarn loosely in back of work, and always twisting yarns when changing color to prevent making a hole. 3rd and 4th rnds: K 1L, * k 3D, k 3L. Repeat from * around, ending with k 2L. 5th and 6th rnds: K 2L, * k 3D, k 3L. Repeat from * around, ending with k 1L. 7th and 8th rnds: * K 3L , k 3D. ending with a purl row.

To Start Instep: With spare needle, k 18D from 1st needle. Slip the last 18 sts of previous rnd from 3rd needle onto other end of spare needle. These are heel sts, to be worked later. For instep, work back and forth in pattern over remaining

To work pattern in rows, follow directions for rnds, purling 2nd and alternate rows, using dark over D sts and light over L sts. Break yarn and slip these sts onto a stitch holder until heel and sole have been worked.

HEEL … With right side facing, work with D at left of instep sts, and knit across 18 heel sts on 3rd needle; then knit across 18 heel sts on 1st needle, thus joining. Work back and forth over the heel sts only as follows: 1st row: * Sl 1, p 1. Repeat from * across row. 2nd row: Sl 1, k across row. Repeat these 2 rows alternately for 2½" ending with a purl row.

To Turn Heel: Sl 1, k 18, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k 1, turn. Sl 1, p 3, p 2 tog., p 1, turn. Sl 1, k 4, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k 1, turn. Sl 1, p 5, p 2 tog., p 1, turn. Continue in this manner, working 1 more st before decreasing on each row until all sts have been worked and 20 sts remain on heel needle. Break yarn. With right side facing, using D, pick up 21 sts along right side of heel, then knit across 10 heel sts. With another needle, knit across remaining 10 heel sts, and pick up 21 sts along other side of heel. Work back and forth as follows:

1st row: K 1, purl to last st on 2nd needle, k 1. 2nd row: K 1, k 2 tog., k to last 3 sts on 2nd needle, sl 1 as if to knit, k 1, p.s.s.o., k 1. Repeat these 2 rows until 36 sts remain on heel needles. Work straight until, ending with a purl row, sole measures (from back of heel)

or 2½" less than desired length when completed. Knit across sole needle (1st needle). Then, with 2nd needle, continue with D and knit across instep sts (thus joining). With 3rd needle, knit across 1st 18 sole sts. Work 4 rnds straight.
To Shape Toe: 1st rnd: Knit to last 3 sts on 1st needle, then k 2 tog., k 1. On 2nd needle, k 1, sl 1 as if to knit, k 1, p.s.s.o., k to 3 sts from end, then k 2 tog., k 1. On 3rd needle, k 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., knit to end. 2nd and 3rd rnds: Knit around. Repeat the last 3 rnds 4 more times (20 sts decreased). Then work only 1 rnd straight between dec. rnds, until 25 sts remain (all sizes). Weave sts together; or bind off, fold and sew. Sew instep and sole together at both sides. Block.

Now, with dark, work thumb as follows: 1st row: K 1, p 1, inc. 1 st in next st, k 1, inc. 1 st in next st, p 1, k 1. 2nd row: P 1, k 1, p 5, k 1, p 1. 3rd row: K 1, p 1, k 5, p 1, k 1. 4th row: Repeat 2nd row. 5th row: K 1, p 1, inc. 1 st in next st, k 3, inc. 1 st in next st, p 1, k 1. 6th row: P 1, k 1, p 7, k 1, p 1. 7th row: K 1, p 1, k 7, p 1, k 1. 8th row: Repeat 6th row. Cast on 4 sts between forefinger and middle finger, and work straight until finger, when tried on, reaches ½" from finger-tip. Then * k 1, k 2 tog. Repeat from * around. Work 1 rnd straight. Next rnd: K 2 tog. around. Break yarn, leaving a 6" end. Thread this end into a needle and run through remaining sts. Draw, tight, and darn in end on wrong side to reinforce tip.
