Gauge: 9 sts make 1 inch; 13 rows make 1 inch.

BLOUSE

Back. Starting at bottom, with main color cast on 121 sts and work in moss st (k 1, p 1) for 6 inches.

To Shape Armholes: Decrease 1 st at end of each row until 101 sts remain. Work straight until work measures 4¼ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each row until 41 sts remain. Bind off.

Left Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 71 sts and work as for back for 6 inches.

To Shape Armhole: Bind off 3 sts at beginning of next row, and decrease 1 st at armhole edge every other row thereafter until 55 sts remain. Work straight until work measures 4½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulder, bind off 3 sts at armhole edge every other row 10 times, and at the same time, at opposite edge (neck edge), bind off 9 sts once, 2 sts every other row twice and then 1 st each row thereafter until 25 sts in all are decreased at neck edge. Then continue with shoulder shaping, keeping neck edge straight until all sts are bound off.

Right Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 67 sts and work as for left front up to shoulder shaping. Then shape shoulder as before, and at the same time at opposite edge (neck edge), bind off 5 sts (instead of 9 sts), and continue as before until all sts are worked off.

Capelettes. Starting at armhole edge, cast on 69 sts and work in pattern for 4 rows. Then bind off 3 sts at beginning of each row until 21 sts remain. Bind off.

Collar. Starting at outer edge, cast on 153 sts and work in pattern, increasing 1 st at both ends of each row 3 times (159 sts). Then on next row and every 4th row thereafter, decrease 10 sts at equal distances apart, decreasing 2 sts at one time until 99 sts remain (To decrease 2 sts, k 2 together twice). Bind off tightly. Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew capelettes in. Work a row of s c around capelettes. Sew collar to neck edge. Sew rick rack to left front along center, 1 inch in from front edge.

Trimming Bands: With crochet hook and one of the contrasting colors, make a chain about 24 inches long, turn and work 2 rows of s c across chain. Break off. Make a similar band with second contrasting color. Break off. Cut bands in two and sew one of same color at each side of rick rack. Then sew second band on each side of previous bands, as in stitch detail on this page. Make a band with the second contrasting color and sew over collar and capelettes around outer edges. Fasten front with snap fasteners.

SHORTS

Right Front. Starting at lower edge, with main color, cast on 67 sts and work in moss st (k 1, p 1), increasing 1 st at end of every 4th row (inner edge) until there are 73 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 2½ inches.

To Shape Crotch: Decrease 1 st at inner edge every other row until 55 sts remain. Work straight until work measures 9 inches in all. On next row make 2 buttonholes, one 4 sts in from side edge and another 20 sts in from inner edge. (To make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 4 sts; then on the next row cast on 4 sts to replace those bound off.) Work straight for ½ inch. Bind off.

Left Front. Same as right front.

Right Back. Starting at lower edge, cast on 81 sts and work as for left front up to shaping of crotch (87 sts on needle).

To Shape Crotch: Bind off 8 sts at inner edge. Then decrease 1 st every other row at same edge until 67 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 4½ inches in all. Then at side edge cast on 8 sts (thus starting an extension piece), and work in pattern until piece measures 9 inches in all. On next row, starting at inner edge, work across 1st 12 sts, turn. Work back over these 12 sts to inner edge. Then work across 19 sts, turn. Work across these 19 sts to inner edge, turn. Continue in this manner adding 7 sts to those of previous row (thus shaping top of shorts), until all sts have been worked across. Work 2 rows straight. Then starting at extension side, make 2 buttonholes as before one 3 sts in from edge and another 3½ inches from 1st buttonhole. Work ½ inch straight. Bind off.

Left Back. Same as right back. Sew up leg and crotch seams. Sew up side seams to within extension piece, then, sew lower edge of each extension piece across front to hold in place. Sew buttons on, 1¾ inches up from lower edge of blouse and to correspond with buttonholes of shorts. Work a row of s c around top of shorts.
