Runabout Sweater Set Pattern

SIZES—2 (4-6).

NOTE—Underline or circle the num­bers applying to the size desired. The first number in each group is for size 2, the second for size 4, the third for size 6.

MATERIALS—SPINNERIN BABY WOOL 8 (9-10) balls; 1 pair Knit­ting Needles No. 2; 1 pair Knitting Nee­dles No. 4; 1 set double point needles No. 2; 1 Crochet Hook No. 4; 6 small pearl buttons.

MEASUREMENTS—Chest 21 (23-25) inches; bottom to underarm 8½ (8¾-9) inches; sleeve to underarm 8 (10½-11½) inches.

GAUGE—7 sts. = 1 inch. 9½ rows= 1 inch. Accurate gauge is essential.

PATTERNSlipover—Stockinette St. (knit 1 row, purl 1 row). Neck, sleeve and waist bands, ribbing of K1, P1. Cardi­gan—Stockinette St. Neck, sleeve and waist bands, ribbing of K1, P1. Center front bands, Seed St. K1, P1 (if row ends with K, start next row with K, if row ends with P, start next row with P).

SLIPOVERBACK—Using No. 2 needles, cast on 74 (80-86) sts. Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 1¼ (1½-1¾) inches. Change to No. 4 needles and work even in stockinette st. until back measures 8½ (8¾-9) inches from start. At the beg. of each of the next 2 rows, bind off 3 (3-4) sts. Dec. 1 st. each end of needle every other row 2 (3-3) times; (64 (68-72) sts. on needle). Work even until armhole measures 4¼ (4½-5) inches straight up from underarm. At the beg. of each of the next 6 (8-6) rows, bind off 6 (5-7) sts. Place remaining 28 (28-30) sts. on holder to be worked later.

FRONT—Work in same manner as back until armhole measures 2½ (3-3½) inches straight up from underarm; (64 (68-72) sts. on needle). Work first 21 (23-24) sts. and place on holder for left shoulder. Work next 22 (22-24) sts. and slip them onto a holder to be worked later for front of neck. Work back and forth on last 21 (23-24) sts. of right shoulder, dec. 1 st. at neck edge every other row 3 times; (18 (20-21) sts. on needle). When armhole measures 4¼ (4½-5) inches straight up from underarm, at beg. of arm edge, bind off 6 (5-7) sts., 3 (4-3) times. Work other shoulder to correspond.

SLEEVES—Using No. 2 needles, cast on 46 (48-48) sts. Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 1½ (1½-1¾) inches. Change to No. 4 needles and work in stockinette st. inc. 1 st. each end of needle every 6th row 5 (6-8) times; (56 (60-64) sts. on needle). Work even until sleeve measures 8 (10½-11½) inches. At the beg. of each of the next 2 rows, bind off 4 (5-5) sts. Dec. 1 st. each end of needle every other row for 2 (2¼-2½) inches. Then at the beg. of each of the next 6 rows, bind off 2 sts. Bind off remaining sts.

FINISHING—Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew sleeves in armholes, matching underarm seams. Using No. 2 double point needles, pick up 92 (92-96) sts. around neck. Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for ¾ inch. Bind off loosely.

CARDIGANBACK—Using No. 2 needles, cast on 76 (82-88) sts. Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 1¼ (1½-1¾) inches. Change to No. 4 needles and work even in stockinette st. until back measures 9 (9¼-9½) inches from start. At the beg. of each of the next 2 rows, bind off 3 (3-4) sts. Dec. 1 st. each end of needle every other row 2 (3-3) times; (66 (70-74) sts. on needle). Work even until armhole measures 4½ (4¾-5¼) inches straight up from underarm. At the beg. of each of the next 6 (8-6) rows, bind off 6 (5-7) sts. Place remaining 30 (30- 32) sts. on holder to be worked later.

LEFT FRONT—Using No. 2 needles, cast on 41 (44-47) sts. Keep 5 sts. at center front of work in seed st. and re­maining sts. in ribbing of K1, P1 for 1¼ (1½-1¾) inches.

Change to No. 4 needles and work in stockinette st. keeping the seed st. border (end of knit rows). When front measures 9 (9¼-9½) inches from start at beg. of arm edge, bind off 3 (3-4) sts. Dec. 1 st. at arm edge every other row 2 (3-3) times; (36 (38-40) sts.). Work even until armhole measures 3 (3¾-4¼) inches straight up from underarm. Place 15 (15-16) sts. at neck edge on holder to be worked later. Dec. 1 st. at neck edge every other row 3 times. When armhole measures 4½ (4¾-5¼) inches straight up from underarm, at arm edge, bind off 6 (5-7) sts., 3 (4-3) times.

RIGHT FRONT—Work right front to correspond, reversing shaping and making buttonholes as follows: when work meas­ures ¼ inch from start and then every 3 (2¾-2¾) inches, making the last but­tonhole in neck ribbing, K1, P1 in seed st. border, bind off next 2 sts. and finish row in pattern. Cast on 2 sts. over those bound off on row below, (6 buttonholes in all).

SLEEVES—Using No. 2 needles, cast on 48 (50-52) sts. Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 1¾ (1¾-2) inches. Change to No. 4 needles and work in stockinette st. inc. 1 st. each end of needle every 6th row 6 (7-8) times; (60 (64-68) sts.).Work even until sleeve measures 9 (11-13) inches from start or desired length to underarm. At the beg. of each of the next 2 rows, bind off 5 (6-6) sts. Dec. 1 st. each end of needle every other row for 2¼ (2½-2¾) inches. Then at the beg. of each of the next 6 rows, bind off 2 sts. Bind off remaining sts.

FINISHING—Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew sleeves in armholes matching underarm seams. Using No. 2 needles, pick up 97 (99-101) sts. around neck. Keep 5 sts. each end of needle in seed st. and remaining sts. in ribbing of K1, P1 for ¾ inch, making the last button­hole 3 (2¾-2¾) inches from last one. Bind off loosely.
