Materials Required—
AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "STAR" PEARL COTTON, SIZE 5
9 60-yd. Balls Cream.
1 60-yd. Ball each of Red, Blue, Yellow.
1 Pair Knitting Needles No. 1.
3 Small Buttons.

The sweater is worked in stockinette st of K 1 row, P 1 row.

Gauge: 10 sts = 1 inch. 12 rows = 1 inch.

FRONT. With Cream, cast on 117 sts and work 2 rows.
Next Row—Attach Red and * K 1 st Red, K 3 sts Cream, repeat from * across row ending with K 1 st Red.
Next Row—P across row following chart No. 1 for border. Continue in same manner following the chart for border until work measures 1½ inches from the beginning, break Red.
Work even in Cream for 4¾ inches ending with the P row.
Next Row—K 2 tog, K 6, * K 2 tog, K 12, repeat from * across row ending row with K 2 tog, K 7, K 2 tog. (107 sts.) P 1 row, then continue working even following pattern chart No. 2, break Colors.
The remainder of front is worked in Cream.
Work 3 rows even ending with the P row.
START SHAPING ARMHOLES. Bind off 4 sts at the beginning of each of the next 4 rows, then bind off 2 sts at the beginning of each of the next 2 rows.
Bind off 1 st at the beginning of each of the next 6 rows. (81 sts.)
Work even for 2¼ inches, ending with the P row.
START SHAPING NECK. K 34, bind off next 13 sts for neck, K 34.
RIGHT SHOULDER. 1st Row—P across row.
2nd Row—K 2 tog, (neck edge) K remaining sts. Repeat the last 2 rows until 28 sts remain ending with the P row.
Work 4 rows even.
K to last 9 sts, turn, P to end of row, K to last 18 sts, turn, P to end of row, then K across row, bind off.
Join thread to neck edge and work left shoulder to correspond.
BACK. Work same as front completing pattern chart No. 2, break Colors, then work 3 rows even in Cream ending with the P row.
Next Row—K 52, K 2 tog, turn, (opening of back) P to end of row. (53 sts.)
* Bind off 4 sts at armhole edge and work 1 row even, repeat from *.
Next Row—Bind off 2 sts at armhole edge and work 1 row even, then decrease 1 st at armhole edge every other row 3 times (40 sts).
Work even for 3¼ inches ending with the K row.
SHOULDER SHAPING. P to last 9 sts, turn, K to end of row. P to last 18 sts, turn, K to end of row.
Next Row—Bind off 12 sts, P to end of row, bind off.
Join thread at center back and work other side to correspond.
SLEEVES. With Cream, cast on 81 sts and work 2 rows. Attach Red and follow chart No. 1 for ¾ inch ending with the P row, break Red.
Continuing in Cream, work 2 rows even.
Next Row—* K 1, increase in next st, repeat from * across row ending row with K 1.
Work even for 1¼ inches ending with the P row.
Bind off 4 sts at the beginning of each of the next 4 rows, then bind off 2 sts at the beginning of each of the next 2 rows. Bind off 1 st at the beginning of each of the next 6 rows.
Next Row—* K 2 tog, repeat from * across row ending with K 1.
Next Row—P 2 tog, P across row to within the last 2 sts, P 2 tog, bind off. Work other sleeve to correspond.
Collar is made in 2 pieces. With Cream, cast on 53 sts and work 2 rows even.
3rd Row—Attach Red and K 4 sts Cream, * 1 st Red, 3 sts Cream, repeat from * to within the 5th st from end, K 1 st Red, K 4 sts Cream.
4th Row—P 3 sts Cream, * 1 st Red, 1 st Cream, repeat from * across row ending with P 1 st Red, 3 sts Cream.
5th Row—Same as 3rd row.
6th Row—P across row, break Red leaving about 1 yd. for end pattern.
7th Row—K 4 sts Cream, 1 st Red, then K remaining sts in Cream to within the last 5 sts, attach about 1 yd. Red and K 1 st Red, K 4 sts Cream.
8th Row—P 3 sts Cream, 1 st Red, 1 st Cream, 1 st Red, P to within the last 6 sts in Cream, P 1 st Red, 1 st Cream, 1 st Red, P 3 sts Cream.
9th Row—Same as 7th row.
Repeat the 6th, 7th and 8th rows.
Next Row—K 4 sts Cream, K 1 st Red, * with Cream, K 3, K 2 tog, repeat from * across row to within the last 8 sts, K 3 sts Cream, 1 st Red, 4 sts Cream.
Work 3 rows even in Cream, bind off. Work other section to correspond. Crochet a row of s c in Cream around each section, break thread. With Red, work 1 s c in each s c.
Press each piece carefully. Sew side seams and shoulder seams. Sew sleeve seams. Sew sleeves in position.
With Cream, crochet 2 rows of s c around back opening working 3 buttonholes evenly spaced on left side of back opening. Sew buttons in position. Sew collar around neck.
