12-inch Zipper

CARRIAGE COVER: With No. 5 needles, cast on 152 sts.
K 10 rows, then work in pattern as follows:

Pattern:
Row 1—K 16, P 4, K 4, P 4, * K 6, P 4, K 4, P 4, repeat to last 16 sts knit to end.
Row 2—K 10, purl to last 10 sts knit to end, repeat Row 1 and 2 twice more, 6 rows in all.
Row 7—K 10, slip the 1st 3 sts onto double pointed needle, hold in back of work, knit the next 3 sts then bring the 3 sts which were slipped forward and knit the work across row, cabling over every rib of K 6. Repeat cables every 8th row.
Work in pattern, cabling as described above until cover measures 30 inches.
Knit 10 rows.
Bind off.

SWEATER-BACK: With No. 3 needles cast on 58 sts knit 16 rows.

Work in pattern as follows:
Row 1—P 8, K 6 * P 4, K 4, P 4, K 6, repeat from * across row, ending P 8.
Row 2—Purl across, repeat above 2 rows, working a cable twist over the ribs of K 6 as described for cover.
Work to underarm, 8½ inches, bind off 4 sts each side.
Work until armhole measures 4 inches. Bind off 16 sts each side for shoulders. Bind off.

FRONT: With No. 3 needles cast on 34 sts. Knit for 16 rows.
Work in pattern to underarm. Bind off 4 sts at armhole side, work until armhole measures 3 inches. Bind off 9 sts at neck edge, then K 2 tog. at neck edge every row 3 times.
Work until armhole measures the same as back.
Bind off.
Work other side the same, reversing pattern, P 2, K 6, P 4, K 4, P 4.

SLEEVE: With No. 3 needles cast on 32 sts knit for 12 rows, increase to 40 sts across row.
Work in pattern until sleeve measures 8 inches.
Bind off 4 sts each side, then K 2 tog. each side every other row until 20 sts are left. Bind off.

Sew shoulder sides and sleeve seams, sew sleeves in place.
Sc 2 rows on each front, collar.
On wrong side of work pick up 54 sts, knit for 26 rows.
Bind off loosely, sew in zipper.

BONNET: With No. 3 needles cast on 66 sts knit 14 rows.
Work in pattern from * of sweater for 3½ inches, then knit, decreasing 6 sts at even intervals across row until 6 sts are left.
Break yarn and pull through sts and fasten.
Sew sides of bonnet together at center back for 2½ inches.

NECKBAND: Pick up 54 sts knit for 10 rows. Bind off.
Make chain about 12 inches, make 2 small pom poms.
Trim as illustrated.

BOOTIES: With No. 3 needles cast on 40 sts, knit for 6 rows.
Work in pattern for 3½ inches.
Knit over 14 sts slip on st holder, work in pattern over 12 sts.
Slip last 14 sts on st holder, continue to work in pattern for 1½ inches.
Pick up 8 sts each side, slip all sts on needles, and knit 1½ inch.
Bind off.
Sew-soles and back seams.
Make chain about 16 inches. Lace through as illustrated.
Trim with small pom poms each end.
