Elliot Tartan Scarf Pattern

9 x 40 inches

MATERIALS:
Chadwick's Red Heart Sock and Sweater Yarn, 3 Ply, Art. E.255, Shrink and Stretch Resist, 2 skeins (1 oz. pull-out skeins) each of Skipper Blue and Black and 1 skein of Scarlet.
Milwards "Phantom" Aluminum Knitting Pins or Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 4 (3½ mm. size).
Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 2.

GAUGE: 7 sts make 1 inch; 8 rows make 1 inch.

NOTE: When carrying unused color across, twist it around the other every other st, being careful not to pull yarn too tightly.

Starting at narrow end with Black, cast on 63 sts and work in pattern as follows: 1st row: K 4 Black, attach a ball of Skipper Blue, * k 1 Skipper Blue, k 1 Black, p 1 Skipper Blue, k 1 Black, k 1 Skipper Blue, k 5 Black, (k 1 Skipper Blue, k 1 Black) 6 times; k 3 Black. Repeat from * across to last 9 sts, k 1 Skipper Blue, k 1 Black, p 1 Skipper Blue, k 1 Black, k 1 Skipper Blue, k 4 Black. 2nd row: P 5 Black, * p 1 Skip­per Blue, k 1 Black, p 1 Skipper Blue, p 6 Black, (p 1 Skipper Blue, p 1 Black) 6 times; p 4 Black. Repeat from * across to last 8 sts, p 1 Skipper Blue, k 1 Black, p 1 Skipper Blue, p 5 Black. Starting with the 3rd row follow chart from arrow to arrow as indicated on chart on page 4 until top of chart is reached, then repeat chart until piece measures 40 inches, ending to correspond with beginning. Bind off.

VERTICAL STRIPES … With crochet hook and 2 strands of Scarlet, make a row of chain st in each of the purl rib sts.
   Block scarf to measurements.

FRINGE … Cut 6 strands of Black, each 4 inches long. Fold strands in half to form loop, insert crochet hook in corner of Scarf, pull loop through and slip all ends through loop, pull ends tightly. Make Fringe across each short end one half inch apart and trim ends evenly.
