Cable Mittens Pattern #397

Size 10-12 years

MATERIAL:

1 skein Knitting Worsted (2 oz. skein)

1 set sock needles each No. 2 and No. 4

GAUGE: 5 sts. = 1 inch

Cast on 40 sts. with No. 2 needles. Join, being careful not to twist sts. Work in ribbing K 2, P 2 for 2 inch. Change to No. 4 needles and pattern. 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounds: K 22, P 2, K 8, P 2, K 6. 4th round: K 22, P 2, slip next 4 sts. to an extra needle and hold in front of work, K next 4 sts., K the 4 sts. from extra needle (a cable made), P 2, K 6. 5th to 11th rounds incl.: like 1st round. 12th round: like 4th round. Continue to work this way cabling the K 8 sts. every 8th round. At the same time when mitten measures ¾ inch. above cuff slip first 6 sts. to a safety pin and cast on 6 sts. Join and work in pattern as before for 3 inch. or des. length to tip. Decr. for tip: * K 2, K 2 tog. Repeat from * across round. K 1 round even. Next round: * K 1, K 2 tog. Repeat from * across round. K 1 round even. Next round: K 2 tog. across round. Break yarn and leave a 7 inch end. Thread a tapestry needle with this end and run twice through rem. sts. Pull sts. tog. and fasten off on wrong side. Thumb: Pick up 6 sts. from safety pin and 6 sts. on the 6 cast on sts., divide sts. on 3 needles and work even for 1 ½ inch. K 2 tog. across round. Finish off as tip of mitten. Work other mitten to correspond and work as follows: 1st row: K 6, P 2, K 8, P 2, K 22 and take the last 6 sts. in round on a safety pin for thumb after ¾ inch.
