Instructions are written in Size 2-4 years, sizes 4-6 years and 6-8 years in parentheses.
MATERIAL:
1 skein Knitting Worsted (2 oz. skein)
or
2 skeins Germantown (1 oz. skein)
or
2 balls Angora (45 yards ball)
1 set sock needles each No. 2 and No. 4
NOTE: For mittens with striped cuff and thumb, small amount of c.c. for trimming
GAUGE: 5 sts. = 1 inch
Cast on 28 sts. (32 sts. - 36 sts.) with No. 2 needles. Join and work in ribbing K 2, P 2 for 2 (2 ½) inch. Change to plain K and work even for ¾ (1) inch. Slip next 4 (5-6) sts. to a safety pin and cast on 4 (5-6) sts. Join and work even for 2 (2 ¼ - 2 ½) inch. Decrease for tip in next round: * K 2, K 2 tog. Repeat from * across round. K 1 round even. Next round: * K 1, K 2 tog. Repeat from * across round. K 1 round even. Next round: K 2 tog. across round. Break yarn and leave a 7 inch end, thread a tapestry needle with this end and run twice through remaining sts. Pull sts. tog. and fasten off on wrong side.
THUMB: Pick up 4 (5-6) sts. from safety pin and 4 (5-6) sts. on the 4 (5-6) cast on sts., divide sts. on 3 needles and work even for ¾ (1 inch). K 2 tog. across round. Finish off as tip. Work other mitten the same way. For mitten No. 394 work cuff in following stripe pattern: 4 rows m.c., 2 rows c.c., 4 rows m.c., 2 rows c.c., 2 rows m.c. Work thumb in following stripe pattern: 2 rows m.c., 2 rows c.c., 2 rows m.c., 2 rows c.c. Finish tip in m.c.
