Size 38

Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 7 balls.
Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size).
3 buttons.

Measurements: Length from top of shoulder — 24 inches. Length of sleeve, underarm seam — 5 inches.

Gauge: 9 sts make 1 inch; 12 rows make 1 inch.

Back. Starting at bottom, cast on 172 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 1 inch. Hereafter, work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) until piece measures 16½ inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 10 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then decrease 1 st at end of each row until 136 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 8 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 8 sts at beginning of each row until 56 sts remain. Bind off these sts for back of neck.

Front. Work as for Back until piece measures 15 inches. On next row, k across 1st 92 sts, turn (thus starting front opening). Work back and forth over these 92 sts, keeping the 12 sts at front opening in garter st (k 12 sts), and making a buttonhole after the 1st inch and every 3 inches thereafter until 3 buttonholes are made. When underarm measures same as underarm of Back, shape armhole as before. (To make a buttonhole, 4 sts in from front edge on one row, bind off 4 sts; then, on next row, cast on 4 sts to replace those bound off.) To shape neck, starting at front opening, bind off 12 sts, then bind off 2 sts at neck edge every other row until 42 sts remain. To shape shoulder, bind off 8 sts at armhole edge every other row until all sts are bound off. Cast on 12 sts and continue across remaining 80 sts and work to correspond, omitting buttonholes.

Sleeves. Starting at bottom, cast on 126 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 1 inch. Hereafter work in stockinette st, increasing 1 st at both ends of every inch 4 times (134 sts). Work straight until piece measures 5½ inches. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 2 sts at beginning of each row until 18 sts remain. Bind off.

Collar. Starting at neck edge, cast on 112 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, increasing 1 st at both ends of each row until there are 186 sts on needle. Bind off.

Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Sew the garter sts of right side of opening across the garter sts of left side on wrong side of work. Sew collar to neck edge so that garter st bands extend beyond edges of collar. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
