Tartan Plaid Stole with Pockets Pattern

MATERIALS: NOMOTTA Mothproof Tartan, 8 one ounce skeins.

KNITTING NEEDLES: 1 pair of straight Size 4 (standard)

GAUGE: 7 sts—1 inch; 9 rows—1 inch.

PLAID PATTERN: Each section of Main Color (MC) must make exactly 14 sts; each section of Contrasting Color (CC) must make exactly 10 sts. The pattern will move 1 st on every row and the remainder left over in the section at end of one row will be used to start the next row.

Starting at top edge of one pocket and at center of a CC section of the yarn, cast on 73 sts. Work in stockinette stitch as follows:
Row 1: 5 CC, * 14 MC, 10 CC; repeat from * across ending with 6 CC.
Row 2: 4 CC, * 14 MC, 10 CC; repeat from * across ending with 7 CC.
Row 3: 3 CC, * 14 MC, 10 CC; repeat from * across ending with 8 CC.
Row 4: 2 CC, * 14 MC, 10 CC; repeat from * across ending with 9 CC.
Row 5: 1 CC, * 14 MC, 10 CC; repeat from * across ending with 10 CC.
Knit across (row 6), thus making a purled ridge on right side for edge of hem.
Row 6: 14 MC, * 10 CC, 14 MC; repeat from * across ending with 1 MC.
Work in stockinette stitch (continuing plaid pattern as explained above—24 rows make one plaid design) until piece measures 10 ins from hemline. Reverse work by knitting on wrong side and purling on right side until piece measures 11 ins from where work was reversed. Now work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 41 ins or until ribbed section will fit around neck and reach 1 in below waistline on each side. Work in reverse stockinette st for 11 ins, then in stockinette st for 10 ins. Make a purled ridge on right side for hemline, work 5 more rows stockinette st. Bind off.

FINISHING: Press the stockinette st and reverse stockinette st sections. Turn back hem at purled ridge, and sew in place. Turn up the stockinette st section to form a pocket and seam sides of pocket. Finish other end the same.
