REQUIREMENTS:

YARN: 4 ounces of Knitting Worsted.

NEEDLES: 1-pr. #8 Single Pointed.

USE THE YARN 2 STRANDS THROUGH THE ENTIRE MITTEN.

RIGHT MITTEN: Starting at the cuff. Using the #8 needles cast on 30 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2 ½ inches. Now work in the stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) for 4 rows.

THUMB INCREASES FOLLOW: Always done on a knit row.

1st inc: K 15 sts; inc. in the next st; k 1; inc. in next st; k 12. Purl across row.

2nd inc: K 15 sts; inc. in next st, k 3; inc. in next st; k 12. Purl across row.

3rd inc: K 15 sts; inc. in next st; k 5; inc. in next st; k 12. Purl across row.

4th inc: K 15 sts; inc. in next st; k 7; inc. in next st; k 12. Purl across row.

5th inc: K 15 sts; inc. in next st; k 9; inc. in next st; k 12. Purl across row.

THUMB SEPARATION-K 16 sts; place onto a stitch holder; k 11 sts, leave on the needle; place the remaining sts onto a stitch holder. Cast on 1 st; turn and purl over 12 sts; cast on 1 stitch (13 sts). Work in stockinette st on thumb sts for 2 ¼ inches. * K 1 st, k 2 sts tog., repeat from * across row. Purl 2 sts together across next row. Break the yarn; leaving 7 inches. Draw thru the remaining sts. Fasten tight on the wrong side. Sew up thumb.

Place the sts off the first st holder back onto the needle; tie yarn into the first st; pick up and knit 4 sts along the thumb; knit the sts off the 2nd st holder. Work on all these sts in stockinette stitch until the mitten measures 4 ¼ inches above the thumb.

DECREASES AT TIP OF MITTEN: 1st dec: * K 6 sts; k 2 sts tog., repeat from * across row, end with k 1. Purl back.

2nd dec: * K 5 sts; k 2 sts tog., repeat from * across row, end with k 1. Purl back.

3rd dec: * K 4 sts; k 2 sts tog., repeat from * across row, end with k 1. Purl back.

4th dec: Knit 2 sts together across the next row.

Break the yarn leaving enough to sew. Draw thru the remaining sts and fasten off on the wrong side. Sew up the side of the mitten.

LEFT MITTEN: Reverse the instructions for this mitten. (thumb inc: K 12 sts; inc. in next st, k 1, inc. in next st, k 15 sts).
