Roman Stripe Afghan Pattern

Very easy to knit in strips of simple garter stitch, with bands of graduating or contrasting colors forming the attractive striped chevron pattern.

COATS & CLARK'S "RED HEART" KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply, Art. E. 234 (4 oz. "Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 6 skeins of No. 225 Lt. Yellow, 3 skeins of No. 255 Tile and 5 skeins each of No. 330 Sand­stone and No. 356 Taupe.

Knitting needles, 1 pair No. 8.

Afghan measures 50 x 75 inches ... Each strip measures 12½ x 75 inches

GAUGE: 9 sts = 2 inches; 1 stripe sequence (44 rows or 22 ridges) = 7½ inches.

STRIP (Make 4) ... With Lt. Yellow, cast on 69 sts. 1st row: K in front and in back of first st—1 st increased; (k 10, k 2 tog, k 10, inc in next st) twice; k 10, k 2 tog, k 10 (69 sts). Repeat first row for pattern working colors as follows: * 6 rows (3 ridges) of Lt. Yellow; 2 rows (1 ridge) of Tile; 12 rows (6 ridges) of Sand­stone; 2 rows (1 ridge) of Tile; 6 rows (3 ridges) of Lt. Yellow; 2 rows (1 ridge) of Tile; 12 rows (6 ridges) of Taupe; 2 rows (1 ridge) of Tile. Re­peat from * 9 more times; then work 6 rows (3 ridges) of Lt. Yellow. Bind off. Matching stripes, sew strips to­gether. Block to measurements.

POMPON (Make 25) ... Wind Lt. Yellow 35 times around 3 fingers. Slip from fingers and tie strands se­curely together at center with a 5-inch strand. Cut loops at each end and trim. Fasten a pompon to each point on each end.
