BACK: Using the #2 needles cast on 76 (84) sts, and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 1½ (1½) inches. Change to the #4 needles and work in the given pattern for size being made, until the piece measures 7½ (8½) inches from the ribbing. Place a colored thread at each end of the work, as a marker. Continue in the pattern until the piece measures 12½ (14) inches in all; ending with the right side of the work facing you for this row. NEXT ROW: Work across 21 (25) sts, bind off loosely the next 34 sts, for the back of neck. Work across the remaining 21 (25) sts. Work in garter stitch (knit every row) for ¾ inches. Now work in the pattern for ¾ (¾) inches. At the neck edge cast on 20 (20) sts. Keeping 7 sts at the front edge in garter stitch, work the remainder of the piece in the pattern stitch, until the piece measures 7 (8) inches from the marker. Place a marker at this point, (you will pick up sleeve sts between these markers). Continue in the pattern until the piece measures 11 (12½) inches from the back of the neck. Change to the #2 needles and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, still keeping the border sts in garter stitch, for 1½ (1½) inches. Bind off knitting the k sts; purling the purl sts.

RIGHT FRONT: BOTH SIZES: Tie yarn at the neck edge and work to correspond to the left front. BUTTONHOLES: Make the first one 2 inches from where you cast on the neck sts. Made as follows: From the front edge, knit 2 sts, bind off 2 sts; finish the row. NEXT ROW: Work back to where you bound off the sts, cast on 2 sts, knit last 2 sts. Repeat buttonhole every 2 inches.

SLEEVE PATTERN: SIZE 2: Row 1: * k 4, p 1, repeat from * across row, ending with k 4. Row 2: Purl all across row. Repeat these 2 rows for pattern.

SLEEVE PATTERN: SIZE 3: Row 1: * p 1, k 4, repeat from * across row, ending with p 1. Row 2: Purl all across row. Repeat these 2 rows for pattern.

SLEEVES: With the right side of the work facing you, using the #4 needles, pick up and knit 54 (60) sts, purl back on the next row. Now work in the pattern in your size, until the piece measures 9 (9½) inches, from where you picked up the sts. Now change to the #2 needles and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 1½ (1½) inches. Bind off loosely, as on the band.

NECK BAND: With the right side of the work facing you, using the #2 needles, pick up and knit 90 (90) sts around the neck. Do ribbing for ¼ inch, make a buttonhole, in the same manner as before. Work ribbing now, until the neck band measures ¾ (¾) inches in all. Bind off loosely, knitting the k sts; purling the p sts. Sew underarm seams and sleeve seams. Sew buttons into place.
