So  that you will get the same neat little jacket, do be sure to buy P & B  Superior Double Knitting, Patonised, the wool we used for this design. You will  need: 8 ozs. (4 and 6 yrs.—10 ozs.) (8 yrs.—12 ozs.). Two No. 9 and two No. 8  Queen Bee Knitting Needles. 6 Buttons.

The instructions are written for  size 2 yrs. Any changes necessary for sizes 4, 6 and 8 yrs. are written in  brackets thus:—( ).
BACK: With No. 9 needles cast on 56 sts. (4 yrs—62 sts.) (6 yrs.—64 sts.) (8 yrs.—70  sts.).
  Before  proceeding with these instructions, please read the "Important  Information" paragraph on patternbook page, regarding size of the garment you wish  to knit.
  Work  7 rows even in Stocking st. ending with knit row.
  Knit  1 row for hemline.
  Change  to No. 8 needles and continue even in Stocking st. until work from hemline  measures 8½ ins. (4 yrs.—9 ins.) (6 yrs.—9½ ins.) (8 yrs.—10 ins.) or desired  length, ending with purl row.
To shape armholes: Cast off 3 sts. (4 and 6 yrs.—4 sts.) (8 yrs.—5 sts.) beginning next 2 rows, then dec. 1. st. each end of needle on next and every following alternate row to 44 sts. on needle. (4 yrs.—46 sts.) (6 yrs.—48 sts.) (8 yrs.—50 sts.). Continue even until armhole from first shaping measures 4½ ins. (4. yrs.—5 ins.) (6 yrs.—5½ ins.) (8 yrs.—6 ins.) ending with purl row.
To shape shoulders: Cast off 6 sts. (4, 6 and 8 yrs.—7 sts.) beginning next 2 rows, then 7 sts. (4 and 6 yrs.—7 sts.) (8 yrs.—8 sts.) beginning following 2 rows. Cast off remaining sts.
LEFT FRONT: With No. 9 needles cast on 39 sts. (4 yrs.—41 sts.) (6 yrs.—43 sts.) (8 yrs.—45  sts.).
  Work  7 rows even in Stocking st. ending with knit row.
  Knit  1 row for hemline.
  Change  to No. 8 needles and proceed:—
  1st row: Knit.
  2nd row: K3. Purl to end of row.
  Repeat  these 2 rows until work is same length as Back to armhole ending with purl row.
To shape armhole and make collar:  1st row: Cast off 3 sts. (4 and 6 yrs.—4 sts.) (8 yrs.—5 sts.). Knit  to end of row.
    2nd row: K4. Purl to end of row.
    3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th rows: K2tog. Knit to end of row.
    4th row: K5. Purl to end of row.
    6th row: K6. Purl to end of row.
    8th row: K7. Purl to end of row.
    10th row: K8. Purl to end of row.
    12th row: K9. Purl to end of row.
    13th row: Knit. (4 yrs. as 2 yrs.) (6 and 8 yrs.—K2tog. Knit to end of row).
    14th row: K10. Purl to end of row.
  31  sts. on needle. (4 yrs—32 sts.) (6 yrs.—33 sts.) (8 yrs.—34 sts.).
  Keeping  armhole edge even, continue in this manner knitting 1. st. more in the front  border every alternate row until there are 18 sts. (4 yrs.—18 sts.) (6 and 8  yrs.—19 sts.) in Garter st. in the border.
  Keeping  these sts. in Garter st. and remaining sts. in Stocking st., continue even  until armhole from first shaping measures 4½ ins. (4 yrs.—5 ins.) (6 yrs.—5½ ins.)  (8 yrs.—6 ins.) ending at armhole edge.
To shape shoulder: Keeping Garter st. border at front edge, at armhole edge cast off 6 sts. (4, 6  and 8 yrs.—7 sts.) once, work 1 row even then cast off 7 sts. (4 and 6 yrs.—7  sts.) (8 yrs.—8 sts.) at beginning of next row.
  On  remaining 18 sts. (4 yrs.—18 sts.) (6 and 8 yrs.—19 sts.) knit 4 rows Garter  st. ending at front edge, (outside edge of border).
  5th row: K13. Turn.
  6th row: Knit to end of row.
  Repeat  last 6 rows 3 times more. (4 yrs.—3 times) (6 and 8 yrs.—4 times).
  Knit  2 rows Garter st. Cast off.
RIGHT FRONT: With No. 9 needles cast on 39 sts. (4 yrs—41 sts.) (6 yrs.—43 sts.) (8 yrs.—45 sts.).
  Work  7 rows even in Stocking st. ending with knit row.
  Knit  1 row for hemline.
  Change  to No. 8 needles and proceed:—
  1st row: Knit.
  2nd row: Purl to last 3 sts. K3.
  Repeat  these 2 rows until work from hemline measures 2½ ins. (4 yrs.—3 ins.) (6 yrs.—3½  ins.) (8 yrs.—3 ins.) ending with purl row.
  Next row: (1st. pair of buttonholes). K3. Wl.fwd. K2tog. K8. Wl.fwd. K2tog. Knit to end  of row.
  Working  2 more pairs of buttonholes 3 ins. (4 and 6 yrs.—3 ins.) (8 yrs.—3½ ins.) apart  continue even until work measures same length as Back to armhole ending at  armhole edge.
To shape armhole: 1st row: Cast off 3 sts. (4 and 6 yrs.—4 sts.) (8 yrs.—5 sts.). Purl to last 4 sts. K4.
    2nd and alternate rows: Knit.
    3rd row: P2tog. Purl to last 5 sts. K5.
    5th row: P2tog. Purl to last 6 sts. K6.
    7th row: P2tog. Purl to last 7 sts. K7.
    9th row: P2tog. Purl to last 8 sts. K8.
    11th row: P2tog. Purl to last 9 sts. K9.
    13th row: Purl to last 10 sts. K10. (4 yrs. as 2 yrs.) (6 and 8 yrs.—P2tog. Purl to last  10 sts. K10).
  31  sts. on needle. (4 yrs.—32 sts.) (6 yrs.—33 sts.) (8 yrs.—34 sts.).
  Continue  to correspond to Left Front, being careful to have all shapings for opposite  side.
SLEEVES: With No. 9 needles cast on 30 sts. (4 yrs.—32 sts.) (6 yrs.—34 sts.) (8 yrs—36  sts.).
  Work  5 rows even in Stocking st. ending with knit row.
  Knit  1 row for hemline.
  Change  to No. 8 needles and continue in Stocking st. inc. 1. st. each end of needle on  9th and every following 8th row to 44 sts. on needle. (4 yrs.—48 sts.) (6  yrs.—52 sts.) (8 yrs.—56 sts.).
  Continue  even in Stocking st. until sleeve from hemline measures 9 ins. (4 yrs.—11 ins.)  (6 yrs.—13 ins.) (8 yrs.—14 ins.) or desired length, ending with purl row.
To shape cap: *Cast off 2 sts. beginning next 2 rows, then 1. st. beginning following 2 rows.* Repeat from * to * to 14 sts. on needle. (4 yrs—18 sts.) (6 yrs.—16 sts.) (8 yrs—20 sts.). Cast off remaining sts.
TO MAKE UP: Press pieces carefully. Sew all seams. Sew the cast-off edges of the borders together and sew the band thus formed across back of neck. Sew in sleeves. Turn under hems at lower edge and cuffs on the knit row and sew in position. Sew buttons to correspond to buttonholes.
