The coat is made of Minerva Scotch Sports Yarn on M. M. No. 4½ Needles; the dress is made of Minerva Olympic on M. M. No. 3½ Needles. Both the coat and the dress are worked entirely in the following pattern.

PATTERN: A multiple of 7 sts. plus 1.

Row 1—* K. 2 sts. tog., K. 2 sts., increase 1 st. by picking up the st. directly under next st. and knitting it, K. next 3 sts., repeat from * across row ending K. last st.

Row 2—Purl.

Row 3—K. 3, * increase 1 st. in same manner as Row 1, K. next 3 sts., K. 2 sts. tog., K. 2 sts., re­peat from * across row ending last pattern K. 2 tog.

Row 4—Purl.

COAT: Back—Cast on 120 sts. Work even for 8 inches, then decrease 1 st. each side. Decrease 1 st. each side every inch 23 more times. Work 1 inch even, then increase 1 st. each side. Increase 1 st. each side every inch 6 more times (86 sts. on needle). Work 2 inches even (work measures 40 inches from start), bind off 4 sts. at the beginning of each of the next 2 rows, then decrease 1 st. each side every other row 7 times (64 sts. on needle). When work measures 8 inches straight up from the bound off sts. at underarm, bind off 6 sts. at the beginning of each of the next 4 rows, then 7 sts. at the beginning of each of the follow­ing 2 rows. Bind off remaining 26 sts. for back of neck.

Right Front—Cast on 57 sts. Work even for 2 inches. Cast on 21 sts. at center edge once. When work measures 11 inches from start, decrease 1 st. at side edge. Decrease 1 st. at side edge every inch 20 times.

At the same time, when work measures 12 inches from start, work a double buttonhole on front edge as follows:

Working from front edge, K. 3, bind off 4, K. 7, bind off 4, work across row. Next row cast on 4 sts. over the bound off sts. Work a double button­hole in this manner on this edge every 3 inches 6 more times.

When work measures 32 inches from start (waist line), increase 1 st. each side. Then increase 1 st. at front edge every 2 inches 8 more times. At the same time, at side edge, increase 1 st. every inch 6 times.
At the same time work five more double button­holes 3 inches apart, working first one 4 inches above last buttonhole.

When work measures 38 inches from start, bind off 4 sts. at side edge, then decrease 1 st. at same edge every other row 10 times.

When work measures 6½ inches straight up from the bound off sts. at underarm (½ inch above last buttonhole, 58 sts. on needle) working from armhole edge, work over 26 sts., bind off 23 sts. Working on the last 9 sts., decrease 1 st. at inside edge every row four times, then 1 st. at same edge every other row 3 times, working last in­crease at outside edge. When work measures 2½ inches above bound off sts., bind off. Join yarn to 26 sts. on needle, decrease 1 st. at inside edge every row 4 times. Then bind off 6 sts. at armhole edge every other row 3 times, then 4 sts. once. All sts. have been worked off.

Left Front—Work to correspond to Right Front omitting buttonholes.

Pockets (make 4).—Cast on 15 sts. and working in pattern, increase 1 st. each side every other row 7 times (29 sts. on needle). When work measures 5 inches from start, bind off.

Sleeves—Cast on 50 sts. Work even for 4 inches then increase 1 st. each side. Increase 1 st. each side every inch 13 times. When work measures 18 inches from start, bind off 5 sts. at the begin­ning of each of the next 2 rows. Decrease 1 st. each side every other row 13 times, then 1 st. each side every row 15 times. Bind off remaining sts.

Collar—Cast on 22 sts. and work even for 16 inches. Bind off.

Sew shoulder seams, sew sleeves in place, sew underarm and sleeve seams. Sew pockets in place as illustrated. Double collar in half lengthwise and sew in place. Turn under 2¼ inches on front edge for facing, matching buttonholes. Turn up a 2 inch hem around bottom of coat and a 1 inch hem on bottom of sleeves.

DRESS

BLOUSE: Back—Cast on 99 sts. Increase 1 st. each side every ½ inch 10 times. Work 2 inches even (work measures 7 inches from start). Bind off 7 sts, at the beginning of each of the next 2 rows, then decrease 1 st. each side every other row 9 times.

When work measures 7 inches straight up from the bound off sts. at underarm, bind off 7 sts. at the beginning of each of the next 8 rows. Bind off remaining 31 sts. for back of neck.

Right Front—Cast on 57 sts. Increase 1 st. at the side edge every ½ inch 10 times, then work 2 inches even (work measures 7 inches from start). At the same time, when work measures 1½ inches from start, work a buttonhole as fol­lows: Work over 3 sts. from center edge, bind off 5 sts., work to end of row. Next row cast on 5 sts. over the bound off sts.

Work a buttonhole in this manner every 3 inches 3 more times (4 buttonholes).

When work measures 7 inches from start, bind off 7 sts. at underarm side. Work over next 17 sts. (18 sts. on needle), bind off next 28 sts. for pocket. Work to end of row. Next row cast on 28 sts. over the bound off sts.

Decrease 1 st. at underarm edge every other row 12 times.

When work measures 5½ inches straight up from the bound off sts. at underarm, bind off 10 sts. at center edge, then decrease 1 st. at center edge every other row 10 times.

When work measures 7 inches straight up from the bound off sts. at underarm, bind off 7 sts. at armhole edge every other row 4 times. All sts. have been worked off. Pick up the 28 sts. cast on at pocket, and work even in Stockinette St. for 3 inches, bind off. Sew sides to inside of blouse.

Left Front—Work to correspond to Right Front, omitting buttonholes.

Sleeves—Cast on 50 sts. Work even for 3 inches, then increase 1 st. each side. Increase 1 st. each side every inch 10 more times, then every ½ inch 6 times, work 2 inches even (work measures 18 inches from start).

Bind off 7 sts. at the beginning of each of the next 2 rows, then decrease 1 st. each side every other row 17 times, then every row 11 times. Bind off remaining 14 sts.

Sew shoulder seams, sew sleeves in place, sew underarm and sleeve seams. Pick up 100 sts. around neck and work in ribbing (K. 1, P. 1) for ¾ inch, then work a buttonhole at right front edge as before.

Work ¾ inch and bind off.

Work 1 row beading around bottom of blouse.

SKIRT: In the skirt Rows 2 and 4 are knit rows; on Rows 1 and 3 work only from * to *. With the Circular Needle, cast on 338 sts. Work 168 sts. in pattern, K. 1 (seam st.), mark this st., work next 168 sts. in pattern, K. 1 (seam st.), mark this st.

Work even for 6 inches then K. 2 sts. tog. before and after each of the 2 seam sts. All decreases are worked in this manner, decreasing 4 sts. on each decreasing row. Decrease every inch 16 more times. Decrease every ½ inch 17 times, work ½ inch even, bind off (skirt measures 31 inches).

Work 2 rows S. C. around bottom of skirt, work beading at top for elastic.

Run 1 piece of elastic through both headings.
