MATERIAL:
3 skeins Sock yarn 3 ply - main color (1 oz. ball)
1 skein Sock yarn 3 ply - light contrasting color (1 oz. ball)
1 skein Sock yarn 3 ply - dark contrasting color (1 oz. ball)
1 pair knitting needles No. 1 and No. 2
1 set bone sock needles No. 2
1 set of yarn bobbins

GAUGE: 7½ sts. = 1 inch

Note: Main color: M
Light contrasting color: L
Dark contrasting color: D

   With M cast on 64 sts. with No. 1 needles for cuff and work back and forth in ribbing K1, P1 for 3½ inches. Break off yarn. Now wind 2 bobbins each in light and dark contrasting color and main color and take 2 long strands each of light and dark contrasting color. Change to No. 2 needles.
   1st row: connect a bobbin of L, K1 L, connect a bobbin of M, K14 M, connect a strand of D, K1 D, connect a strand of L, K1 L, K14 M, connect a bobbin of D, K2 D, connect a second bobbin of M, K14 M, connect a strand of L, K1 L, connect a strand of D, K1 D, K14 M, connect a bobbin of L, K1 L.
   2nd row: To prevent a hole, twist yarns around each other, when changing colors. P2 L, 12 M, 1 D, 2 M, 1 L, 12 M, 4 D, 12 M, 1 L, 2 M, 1 D, 12 M, 2 L.
   3rd row: K3 L, 10 M, 1 D, 4 M, 1 L, 10 M, 6 D, 10 M, 1 L, 4 M, 1 D, 10 M, 3 L.
   4th row: P4 L, 8 M, 1 D, 6 M, 1 L, 8 M, 8 D, 8 M, 1 L, 6 M, 1 D, 8 M, 4 L. Continue to work this way having 1 more st. in each of the L half diamonds and 1 more st. each side of the D diamond, (Main color diamonds are getting smaller this way), until pattern is: 8 L, 1 D, 14 M, 1 L, 16 D, 1 L, 14 M, 1 D, 8 L. Next row:7 L, 1 D, 1 L, 14 M, 1 D, 1 L, 14 D, 1 L, 1 D, 14 M 1 L, 1 D, 7 L. Next row: 6 L, 1 D, 3 L, 12 M, 3 D, 1 L, 12 D, 1 L, 3 D, 12 M, 3 L, 1 D, 6 L. Continue to work in pattern until 1 set of diamonds (1 half one on each side in L and 1 dark one in center) is finished, break off the 2 light and the 1 dark bobbins and reversing the colors (1 half one on each side in D, and 1 light one in center), work 1 more set of diamonds. Sock will now measure 10 inches. Break off all bobbins.
   Start heel: Slip the first and last 16 sts. on to one needle for heel and the rem. 32 instep sts. slip to a holder. Work over heel sts. only in M. 1st row: (right side) * slip 1, K1 repeat from * all across. 2nd row: P across. Repeat these 2 rows for 28 rows. Now shape heel with right side facing you, slip 1, K16, K2 tog. K1, turn; slip 1, P3, P2 tog. P1, turn; slip 1, K4, K2 tog. K1, turn, slip 1, P5, P2 tog. P1, turn, slip 1, K6, K2 tog. K1, turn. Continue to work this way having 1 more st. on each row until 18 sts. are left over. Work to center of heel needle. From here on sock is worked open, take another needle K9 heel sts., pick up and K14 sts. along one side of heel, K across instep sts. as follows: connect a strand of L, K1 L, K14 M, connect a bobbin of D, K2 D, connect another bobbin of M, K14 M, connect a strand of L, K1 L. With M pick up and K14 sts. along other side of heel, K across 9 heel sts. in M. Next row: P23 M, insert a marker, P1 M, 1 L, 12 M, 4 D, 12 M, 1 L, 1 M, insert a marker, P23 M. (Have for the first 10 rows the 32 instep sts. on a double pointed needle in order to have sock not pulled out of shape.)
   Next row start Instep: 1st row: K with M to 2 sts. before marker, K2 tog., work across instep sts. as follows: K2 M, 1 L, 10 M, 6 D, 10 M, 1 L, 2 M. With M, slip 1, K1 and pull the slipped st. over the K st. K to end with M. 2nd row: P to marker with M, work across instep sts. as follows: P3 M, 1 L, 8 M, 8 D, 8 M, 1 L, 3 M, P to end with M. Continue to decrease 1 st each side for instep every K row and keep the instep sts. in pattern until there are 60 sts. (64 sts. for larger sizes) on needle. Then discontinue to decrease for instep and break off L and D strands as soon as they reach the side of the D diamond. Finish the D diamond ending with a K row. Break off all bobbins and connect a ball of M. P 1 row. Change to No. 2 sock needles and K across 15 (16) sts. (first needle), K across 30 (32) sts. (2nd needle), K across 15 (16) sts. (3rd needle). Join and K around with M until sock measures from back of heel 8 inches tor size 10 (8½ inches for size 10½, 9 inches for size 11, 9½ inches for size 11½, 10 inches for size 12, 10½ inches for size 12½, and 11 inches for size 13). Now start to decrease for toe. 1st round: K to within 3 sts. of first needle, K2 tog., K1, on 2nd needle K1, slip 1, K1 and pull the slipped st. over the K st., K to within 3 sts., K2 tog., K1, on 3rd needle, K1 slip 1, K1 and pull the slipped st. over the K st. K to end. 2nd round: K around. Repeat these 2 rounds until 16 sts. are left over. Weave sts. tog. Sew up back seam.
