GAUGE: Fair Isle Pattern—10 sts = 1 inch
Stockinette st—17 sts = 2 inches
RIGHT MITTEN—Cuff—With A, cast on 64 sts; divide on 3 needles; join with care not to twist sts on needles. Work k 2, p 2 ribbing for 3 ins.
Inc. round—K, increasing 1 st in every 4th st 16 times; 80 sts. Mark end of rounds.
Hand—Pattern—Round 1—With A, k all sts. Carry yarn not in use on wrong side of work.
Round 2—* K 1 A, 3 B, 1 A, 3 B, 1 A, 1 B, 1 A, 1 B, 1 A, 1 B, 1 A, 1 B; repeat from * around. Continue pat. following chart.
Repeat 16 rounds of pat. until about 2½ ins. above cuff.
Next round—Work pat. on first 42 sts; with a separate strand of colored thread, k next 12 sts for thumb, then slip these sts back to left hand needle and continue pat. around until about 7 ins. above cuff, end with 8th or 16th pat. round. Break off colors.
With A only, k 1 round even.
First dec. round—* K 6, k 2 tog.; repeat from * around; 70 sts. K 1 round even.
2nd dec. round—* K 5, k 2 tog.; repeat from * around; 60 sts. K 1 round even. Continue to dec. 10 sts in a round every 2nd round, having 1 st less between decs. after each dec. round, until 20 sts remain. K 1 round even. K 2 tog. 10 times; break off leaving an end. Draw end tightly through all 10 sts. Fasten off.
Thumb—Draw out the colored thread, pick up 12 sts on each side of opening, pick up 1 extra st on each side; divide these 26 sts on 3 needles. With A only, k around for 2¼ ins.
Next round—* K 11, k 2 tog.; repeat from * around; 24 sts.
First dec. round—* K 2, k 2 tog.; repeat from * around; 18 sts. K 1 round even.
2nd dec. round—* K 1, k 2 tog.; repeat from * around; 12 sts. K 1 round even. K 2 tog. 6 times. Break off; draw end tightly through all 6 sts; fasten off.
LEFT MITTEN—Work same as right mitten until 2½ ins. above cuff.
Next round—Work pat. on first 26 sts, with separate strand of colored thread, k 12 and slip these 12 sts back to left hand needle, continue pat. Finish same as right mitten.
