REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: 3-oz. of Blue Knitting Worsted. 1-oz. of White Knitting Worsted.
NEEDLES: 1-pr. No. 4 single pointed.
Two stitch holders.

GAUGE: 6 sts to an inch

STARTING AT THE CUFF: Using the white yarn, cast on 48 sts. Knit 1 row. Tie in blue yarn and work as follows: 1st row: K 2 blue, k 2 white; repeat across row ending with k 2 white. 2nd row: P 2 white, p 2 blue, repeat across row ending with p 2 blue. 3rd row: K 2 white, k 2 blue, repeat across row ending with k 2 blue. 4th row: P 2 blue, p 2 white, repeat across row ending with p 2 white. Repeat these 4 rows, twice more. With white yarn knit across row decreasing to 42 sts. K 3 rows with white yarn. Break off white and finish remainder of sock with blue yarn. P 1 row, k 1 row, until the sock measures 5 inches from cuff ending with a purl row. HEEL: Knit 11 sts, place next 20 sts onto a st holder for instep, remaining 11 sts onto a 2nd st holder. Work in stockinette stitch on the 11 heel sts for 16 rows, ending with a purl row.

SHAPING OF HEEL:
K 2, k 2 tog, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 3, turn;
K 3, k 2 tog, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 4, turn;
K 4, k 2 tog, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 5, turn;
K 5, k 2 tog, k 1, (7 sts).
With the same needle, pick up and knit 10 sts along side of heel, knit the 20 sts of instep onto the needle, now place all these sts onto a free st holder; knit 11 sts off 2nd st holder. Work in stockinette st on these 11 sts for 17 rows, ending with a knit row.

SHAPING 2ND HALF OF HEEL:
P 2, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 3, turn;
P 3, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 4, turn;
P 4, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 5, turn;
P 5, p 2 tog, p 1, (7 sts).
With the same needle, pick up and purl 10 sts along side of heel, place a marker on the needle; purl 20 sts of instep, place a marker; purl remaining 17 sts.

GUSSET DECREASES: Knit to within 3 sts of first marker, k 2 tog, k 1; slip marker, knit across instep sts, slip marker; k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to end of row. Next row: Purl across row keeping markers in place. Repeat these last 2 rows until 42 sts remain. Drop off markers. Work even in stockinette stitch until the foot measures 1¾ inches less than desired length, measuring from back of heel and ending with a knit row. Purl 10 sts, place a marker, purl 22 sts, place a marker, purl remaining 10 sts.

TOE DECREASES: Knit to within 3 sts of first marker, k 2 tog, k 1, slip marker; k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to within 3 sts of 2nd marker, k 2 tog, k 1, slip marker; k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to end of row. Next row: Purl across row keeping markers in place. Repeat these last 2 rows until 14 sts remain or the needle. Bind off. Sew across toe, having decreases at side. Sew sole and back seams. Make the other sock the same way.
