Knitted Bed Jacket Pattern #449

Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Saxony, 16 balls (⅔ oz. balls).
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size).
3½ yds. of velvet ribbon, 1 inch wide.

Gauge: 8 sts make 1 inch; 12 rows make 1 inch.

Back. Starting at bottom, cast on 177 sts. 1st row: * K 2, p 5. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 2. 2nd row: * P 2, k 1, O, k 3 tog., O, k 1. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 2. 3rd row: * K 2, p 5. Repeat from * across ending row with k 2. 4th row: * P 2, keeping yarn in front of work k 2 tog. (thus a yarn over is made), k 1, k 2 tog., O. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 2. 5th row: * K 2, p 5. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 2. These last 4 rows constitute the pattern. Repeat these 4 rows until piece measures 9 inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 7 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 149 sts remain. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row until 117 sts remain. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 79 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 10½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping.

Right Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 114 sts and work in pattern as for Back until piece measures 9 inches.

To Shape Armhole: Starting at underarm side, bind off 7 sts once. Then dec. 1 st at armhole edge every other row until 100 sts remain. Now dec. 1 st at armhole edge every 3rd row until 74 sts remain. Then dec. 1 st at armhole edge every other row until 65 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 10½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Bind off.

Left Front. Work exactly as for Right Front, reversing shapings.

Sleeves. (Raglan.) Starting at bottom, cast on 170 sts and work in pattern, decreasing 1 st at both ends of every 9th row until 128 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 18 inches in all. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 14 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row until 44 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 10½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Bind off.

Sew up underarm seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in place. Make a 1-inch hem all around neck edge on wrong side. Make a similar hem around bottom of sleeves. Run ribbon through hems, and tie as in illustration.
