Knitting Bag Pattern #475

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5, 3 balls each of Light Blue, Dark Blue, Red and Ecru.
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size).
A pair of wooden knitting bag handles.
½ yd. sateen lining material.

Gauge: 9 sts make 1 inch; 12 rows make 1 inch.

Starting at top edge, with Light Blue cast on 146 sts and work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) for 4 rows. ** Drop Light Blue, and attach Dark Blue. 5th row: * K 6, sl 1. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 6. 6th row: * P 6, sl 1. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 6. 7th row: Repeat 5th row. 8th row: P across. Drop Dark Blue, attach Red. 9th to 12th rows incl: Repeat 5th to 8th rows incl. Drop Red, attach Ecru. 13th to 16th rows incl: Repeat 5th to 8th rows incl. Drop Ecru, pick up Light Blue. 17th to 20th rows incl: Repeat 5th to 8th rows incl. Repeat from ** until piece measures 12 inches (lower edge of bag). Work other side to correspond, reversing colors of stripe pattern. Bind off.

Fold piece in half so that stripes run horizontally, and sew side edges to within 5 inches of top edges, matching stripes. Cut a piece of lining 16 x 24 inches. Fold to measure 16 x 12 inches, and sew along both 12-inch edges to within 5 inches of top edges. Fit lining into bag, and fasten lower corners of bag and lining together securely. Work a row of s c closely together over lower part of each of 2 handles. Turn down top edges of lining, gather to size of s c-row on handle, and sew in place. Sew knitted part of bag to handles in same way, finishing side openings neatly.
