Requirements:

YARN: Knitting Worsted: Main color — 10 oz. Design Colors: 4 oz. white, 5 yds. red.
NEEDLES: 1-pr. each No. 2 and No. 5 single pointed.
CHART

GAUGE: 5 ½-sts to an inch. 6 ¼ rows to an inch.

BACK: Using the #2 needles and the main color, cast on 71 sts. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2 inches. Now change to the #5 needles and follow the diagram. Decreases at the underarm are made by binding off the number of sts shown, in binding off always slip the first st. SHOULDERS: Bind off 6 sts at the beginning of the next 4 rows, 7 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows, (19 sts for each shoulder). Place the remaining sts onto a st holder for back of neck.

FRONT: Using the #2 needles, cast on 35 sts. Work in ribbing for 2 inches. Now change to the #5 needles and work in the pattern from the underarm edge to center line for one half of front. Work front as shown on the diagram. Neck shaping: Bind off as shown. Then follow the diagram to shoulders. SHOULDER SHAPING: From the armhole edge bind off 6 sts twice 7 sts once. Make the other front to correspond.

FRONT BANDS: Left front: Using the #2 needles, cast on 8 sts and work in ribbing until the piece is long enough for the left front of sweater. Place these sts onto a st holder. Right front: Work as the left for an inch. Buttonhole—Work 3 sts, bind off 2 sts, work to end. On the next row cast on 2 sts over those bound off on row below. Repeat buttonhole every 2 ¼ inches. Make a piece for length of right front. Place onto a st holder. Now sew the bands onto the front edges.

SLEEVES: Using the #2 needles and the main color, cast on 40 sts. Work in ribbing for 2 inches. Change to the #5 needles and knit across row, increasing to 45 sts. Now follow the diagram, making increases as shown at each side of the sleeve. Make the decreases for top of sleeve by binding off at the beginning of each row the number of sts shown. Then bind off remaining sts.

FINISHING: Sew the shoulder and side seams. Sew sleeve seams and sew into the armhole, matching the underarm seams.

NECK BAND: Using the #2 needles; pick up and knit 78 sts around neck edge, including the 16 sts of bands. Work ribbing for 5 rows. Bind off loosely.
