Size 4 Years

REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: 6 ounces of Yellow Orion Knitting Worsted.
2 ounces of White Orion Knitting Worsted.
NEEDLES: 1-pr. each No. 4 and No. 7

GAUGE: 3 st = 1 inch

BACK: Using the yellow and the No. 4 needles cast on 63 sts. Work as follows: 1st row: (right side) p 1, * k 1, p 1, repeat from * across row. 2nd row: K 1, * p 1, k 1, repeat from * across row. Repeat these 2 rows until the piece measures 2 inches in all, ending on the wrong side. Now change to the No. 7 needles. Pattern: Row 1: (right side) Knit all across row. Row 2: K 1, * p 1, k 1, repeat from * across row. Repeat these last 2 rows for the pattern. Work even until the piece measures 8¾ inches in all (or desired length to underarm), ending on the wrong side. Armhole Shaping: Bind off 4 sts, at the beginning of the next 2 rows (once at each side). Decrease 1 st at each side of the work every other row 3 times. Work even in the pattern until the armhole measures 4¾ inches above the underarm bind off.

SHOULDERS: Bind off 4 sts at the beginning of the next 6 rows. Bind off the remaining sts for back of neck.

LEFT FRONT: Using the yellow and the No. 4 needles cast on 31 sts and work in ribbing as on the back for 2 inches, ending on the wrong side. Pattern: Change to the No. 7 needles. Row 1: Knit across row. Row 2: K 1, * p 1, k 1, repeat from * across row. Repeat these last 2 rows once more. Now tie in white yarn (with the right of the work facing you.) Row 5: Repeat row 1. Row 6: Repeat row 2. Row 7 thru 18: Repeat these last 2 rows. Repeat these 18 rows for the pattern, carrying the color yarn not used loosely along the edge. Work until the front measures 8¾ inches (or the same length as the back up to the underarm), ending with the wrong side. Underarm Shaping: At the underarm edge bind off 4 sts, once. Decrease 1 stitch at the underarm edge every other row 3 times. Now work even in the pattern until the armhole measures 3½ inches above the underarm bind off. Neck Shaping: At the neck bind off 8 sts once; decrease 1 st at the neck edge every row 4 times. When the armhole measures 4¾ inches, shape the shoulder as on the back.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond to the left front.

SHORT SLEEVES: Sleeves are made in all yellow. Using the yellow and the No. 4 needles, cast on 47 sts and work in tight ribbing as on the back until the piece measures an inch, ending with the wrong side. Now change to the No. 7 needles and work as on the back until the sleeve measures 2½ inches in all. Underarm Shaping: Bind off 4 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Decrease 1 st at each side of the work every 3rd row until 21 sts remain. Decrease 1 st at each side of the work every row 3 times (15 sts). Bind off all sts. Make the other sleeve the same way.

FINISHING: Sew shoulder and side seams. Sew sleeve seams and sew sleeves into armhole easing in fullness towards the top.

NECK BAND: With the right side of the work facing you using the No. 6 hook, make 1 row of s c around the neck edge, holding in to desired neck edge. Ch 1, turn, make 2 more rows of s c. Break yarn. Left front band: Tie yarn at neck edge, with the right side of the work facing you, make 1 row of s c down along front edge, keeping the work flat. Ch 1, turn, make 2 more rows of s c. Break yarn. Right front band: Tie yarn in at lower edge, make 1 row of s c along front edge (having the same number of sts as on left front); work to neck edge, ch 1, turn; make 1 s c, * chain 2 sts, skip 1 st, make 1 s c in next 5 sts (or space buttonholes evenly); repeat from * to end of row. Ch 1, turn. Make 1 row of s c, placing 1 s c over ch 2 space on row below. Break yarn. Sew on buttons.
