Baby Bonnet Pattern #5245

MATERIALS:
CHADWICK'S RED HEART BABY BUNT­ING, 2 balls (¾ oz. balls).
Clark's O.N.T. Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 1 and 1 pair No. 3.
¾ yard ribbon, ½ inch wide.
1 yard ribbon, 1 inch wide.

GAUGE: (Stockinette Stitch on No. 3 needles) 7 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch.

   Starting at lower edge of side with No. 1 needles, cast on 34 sts. Work in garter st (k each row) for ½ inch. Next row: K 1 (k 2 tog, O, k 4) 3 times; (O, k 2 tog, k 4) twice; O, k 2 tog, k 1. Following row: K each st and each O across (34 sts). Continue in garter st until piece measures 1 inch. Next row: K 3 (inc in the next st, k 2) twice; inc in each of the next 7 sts, (k 3, inc in next st) 3 times; k 6 (46 sts). Change to No. 3 needles and work in pattern as follows: 1st row: K 12, p 2, make a front cable over the next 9 sts—to make a front cable, slip next 3 sts onto a double-pointed needle and hold in front of work; k 3, k the 3 sts from double-pointed needle, k 3; p 2, k 21. 2nd row: K 1 (front edge), p 20, k 2, p 9, k 2, p 12. 3rd row: K 12, p 2, k 9, p 2, k 21. 4th row: Same as 2nd row. 5th row: K 12, p 2, make a back cable over the next 9 sts—to make a back cable, k 3, slip next 3 sts onto a double-pointed needle and hold in back of work, k 3, k the 3 sts from double-pointed needle; p 2, k 21. 6th, 7th and 8th rows: Repeat 2nd, 3rd and 2nd rows respectively. These 8 rows constitute the pattern. Repeat pat­tern until piece measures 12 inches in all, ending with either the 1st or the 5th row. Next row: Change to No. 1 needles, k 6, (k 2 tog, k 3) 3 times; (k 2 tog) 7 times; (k 2, k 2 tog) twice; k 3 (34 sts). Work remaining inch to corre­spond with other end. Bind off. Fold piece in half and sew back seam.

FRONT BAND … With double yarn and No. 3 needles, cast on 11 sts. 1st row: P 1, make a front cable, p 1. 2nd row: P across. 3rd row: P 1, k 9, p 1. 4th row: P across. 5th row: P 1, make a back cable, p 1. 6th, 7th and 8th rows: Repeat 2nd, 3rd and 2nd rows respectively. Repeat these 8 rows until piece measures 11 inches in all, ending with either the 1st or the 5th rows. Bind off, knitting the sts.

FINISHING … Place the right side of front band against the wrong side of hood, leaving the 1-inch garter st border free at lower edge. Whip edges together, turn front band back onto right side of hood and sew lower edges of band down. Cut narrow ribbon in half. Run each rib­bon through eyelets from center back to front edge. Tack ends at front edge. Tie ends in bow at center back. Trim ends. Cut wide ribbon in half and sew to under­side of lower front edge. Press through damp cloth.
