Cap Pattern

You'll have no trouble making this set! A pretty cable circles the cap; another cable goes down the center of each mitten. Directions tell how to knit on four needles and how to work the cable.

SIZES: Headband, about 20".

MATERIALS: American Thread Company "Dawn" Knitting Worsted, 2 1-oz. skeins for cap. 4 dp aluminum knitting needles No. 3 (standard). English size 10. Steel crochet hook No. 00.

CAP: On 1 needle, cast on 22 sts. Edge stitch: Always sl first st of row, k last st through back of st.

Row 1: Edge st, k each st across, edge st.

Row 2: Edge st, k 7, p 6, k 7, edge st.

Rows 3 to 6: Repeat rows 1 and 2.

Row 7: Edge st, k 7, sl next 3 sts onto extra needle and hold in back of work, k next 3 sts, then k the 3 slipped sts (cable twist), k 7, edge st.

Row 8: Repeat row 2.

Rows 9 to 18: Repeat rows 1 and 2. Repeat pat from row 7 until band measures about 20" or desired headsize. End with row 6 after twist. Bind off on right side, break yarn, leaving end for sewing. Sew ends tog. Fasten off.

Strap: At center back, pick up 6 sts. K garter st for about 6", bind off, leave end for sewing, sew on opposite side of band. At center of side, pick up 6 sts, work cross strap to correspond.

With hook, crochet sl st around bottom of band and around each triangular section of top and strap. Fasten off. Steam cap.
