Sew the ends together and press through a damp cloth.
With right side toward you, starting at seam and using 3 needles, pick up sts along one side as follows: 26 sts on each of first 2 needles and 28 sts on 3rd needle. Work around in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 3", ending at seam (center back). Turn work inside out to reverse, and work in ribbing of p 1, k 4 for 4", having p-1 rib at center back.
Next rnd: P 1, k 2 tog., work in pattern to within last 2 sts, k last 2 sts tog. Work 4 rnds straight. Following rnd: P 1, k 3, p 1, k 2 tog., work in pattern to within 6 sts from end, k 2 tog., p 1, k 3. Work 4 rnds straight. Continue in this manner, decreasing 1 st in 2 more ribs every 5th rnd until pattern is p 1, k 3 throughout (64 sts). Work straight to 8½" for size 8 (or to 9½" for size 9, 10½" for size 10) from where work was reversed.
   Then work as follows: 1st rnd: With the 1st needle, k 2 tog., k 18, p 1; on the 2nd needle (k 3, p 1) 5 times, k 1; on the 3rd needle k 2, p 1, k 19. 2nd rnd: K 16, (k 3, p 1) 7 times, k 19. Repeat the 2nd rnd 3 more times.

To Start Heel: K 16, then slip the last 16 sts of previous rnd onto the other end of the same needle. These 32 sts are to be worked for heel. Divide remaining 31 sts on 2 needles and hold for instep. Work stockinette st (p 1 row, k 1 row) for 27 rows, always slipping the 1st st on each row and knitting the last st on each purl row.

To Shape Heel: K 18, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., turn. Sl 1, p 4, p 2 tog., turn. Sl 1, k 5, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., turn. Sl 1, p 6, p 2 tog., turn. Continue in this manner, working 1 more st on each row and always slipping the 1st st after turning until all sts are being worked (18 sts on needle), ending with a p row. Next row: K across 9 sts. With another needle (hereafter to be called the 1st needle), k across remaining 9 heel sts, and pick up 15 sts along side of heel. With 2nd needle, work across instep sts. With 3rd needle pick up 15 sts along 2nd side of heel and work 1st 9 heel sts. There are now 24 sts on each of the 1st and 3rd needles and 31 sts on the 2nd needle.

Repeat these 2 rnds alternately until there are only 16 sts remaining on 1st and 3rd needles. Work straight until piece measures, from back of heel, 6" for size 8; 7" for size 9; or 8" for size 10 (or 2" shorter than desired length when finished).

To Shape Toe: 1st rnd: K to within 3 sts from end of 1st needle; k 2 tog., k 1; on 2nd needle k 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o.; work in pattern to within last 3 sts, k 2 tog., k 1; on 3rd needle, k 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k to end. 2nd rnd: Work straight.
