Cable Socks and Calots Set Pattern #376

MATERIALS:
CHADWICK'S RED HEART SHETLAND FLOSS, 1 oz. balls
Calot requires 2 balls, including pigtail (if pigtail is omitted, 1 ball is sufficient).
Children's Knee Length Socks require 4 balls for small size; 5 balls for medium or large size.
Short Cable Socks require 3 balls for Women's or Men's socks (all sizes).
5 double-pointed steel needles No. 12.
4 double-pointed steel needles No. 14.

GAUGE: Pattern stitch (not stretched) 11 sts make 1"; 13 rnds make 1".

CALOT No. 376

Medium Size—For Mother and Daughter

Start at bottom. Cast on 138 sts on 3 No. 12 needles. Join, being careful not to twist. 1st rnd: * P 1, k 6, (p 1, k 1) 8 times. Repeat from * around. 2nd rnd: Repeat 1st rnd. 3rd rnd: * P 1, make a cable—to make a cable, sl the next 3 sts onto a spare needle and hold in back of work; k the next 3 sts, k sts from spare needle. (P 1, k 1) 8 times. Repeat from * around. 4th to 8th rnds incl: Repeat 1st rnd. Repeat 3rd to 8th rnds incl. for pattern. Work straight in pattern for 3". On next rnd, dec. as follows: * Work 8 sts in pattern, k 2 tog., (k 1, p 1) 5 times; k 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o. Repeat from * around (2 sts decreased in each ribbed panel, 12 sts decreased in rnd). Work 3 rnds straight. Next rnd: * Work 8 sts in pattern, k 2 tog., (p 1, k 1) 4 more times; p 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o. Repeat from * around. Work 3 rnds straight. Continue decreasing 12 sts in this manner every 4th rnd 4 more times (66 sts on needles). Following rnd: * Work 8 sts in pattern, k 3 tog. Repeat from * around. Work 3 rnds straight. With 3rd needle, purl 1st st from 1st needle. Then * work 6 sts in pattern, p 3 tog. Repeat from * around. Work 3 rnds straight. Next rnd: K 2 tog. all around (21 sts remain). Break yarn, leaving a 10" end. Thread a needle with this end, run it through the remaining sts; draw tight and fasten securely on wrong side. Work 1 row of single crochet around edge.

Top Knot … With double yarn and crochet hook, ch 14, make a double crochet in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. Fasten off and make 2nd piece to correspond. Place wrong sides of chains together and fasten with 1 row of single crochet around edge. Sew to center top of calot.

Pigtail ... Cut thirty 60" lengths of yarn. Fold these lengths in half and tie securely at fold. Braid to within 2" of bottom. Tie this end with ribbon. Sew other end to top of calot.

CHILDREN'S KNEE LENGTH SOCKS No. 376

Sizes 7½ to 10

Cast on 80 sts loosely onto 3 No. 14 needles (for all sizes). Join, being careful not to twist. Work in rnds of k 1, p 1 ribbing for 3", increasing 1 st on last rnd (81 sts). Change to No. 12 needles and work in pattern as follows: 1st and 2nd rnds: * K 1, p 1, k 6, p 1. Repeat from * around. 3rd rnd: * K 1, p 1, make a cable—to make a cable, slip next 3 sts onto a spare needle and hold in back of work, k next 3 sts, then k sts from spare needle. P 1; repeat from * around. 4th to 8th rnds incl: Repeat 1st rnd. Repeat 3rd to 8th rnds incl. for pattern until piece measures, in all, 14½" for small size; 15" for medium size; 15½" for large size (or desired length to top of heel).

HEELNext rnd: With 4th needle, knit across 55 sts (not in pattern), turn, and purl back across these sts, decreasing evenly to 32 sts (this is 1st, or heel, needle). Divide the remaining 26 sts between 2nd and 3rd needles for instep. Now work in rows of stockinette stitch (k 1 row, p 1 row) over heel needle— always slip the 1st st on each row and knit the last st on each purl row—for 25 rows.

To Shape Heel: K 20, k 2 tog., turn; p 9, p 2 tog., turn. K 10, k 2 tog., turn; p 11, p 2 tog., turn. K 12, k 2 tog., turn. Continue in this manner until all sts are worked into 1 row (last row being a purl row) and 20 sts remain. Now knit 10 sts. Slip instep sts onto 1 needle. With another needle (to be called 1st needle), knit remaining heel sts. With same needle, pick up along edge of heel 13 sts for small size; 14 sts for medium size; or 15 sts for large size. With 2nd needle, work in pattern across instep sts. With 3rd needle, pick up along other edge of heel 13 sts for small size; 14 sts for medium size; 15 sts for large size. Knit last 10 sts. Dec. for instep as follows: 1st rnd: Knit across 1st needle, work in pattern across 2nd needle, knit across 3rd needle. 2nd rnd: Work to within last 3 sts on 1st needle, k 2 tog., k 1. Work in pattern across 2nd needle. On 3rd needle, k 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., knit remainder of rnd. Repeat these last 2 rnds alternately until there remain 56 sts for small size; 58 sts for medium size; or 60 sts for large size. Work straight until piece measures, from back of heel, 6" for small size; 7" for medium size; or 8" for large size—or 2" less than desired length when completed.

To Shape Toe: Discontinue pattern across instep and knit around for ½". Then shape toe as follows: Work to within last 3 sts on 1st needle, k 2 tog., k 1. On 2nd needle, k 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., work to within last 3 sts on 2nd needle, k 2 tog., k 1. On 3rd needle, k 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., work remainder of rnd. 2nd rnd: Knit around. Repeat these 2 rnds alternately until there remain 20 sts (for all sizes).
   Weave stitches together; or bind off, fold and sew.
