Pembroke Coat Pattern #1101

Size 34

Materials:
Chadwick's Red Heart Germantown Zephyr, 33 balls (1 oz. balls) and 3 balls of a contrasting color; or Chadwick's Red Heart Knitting Worsted, 45 skeins (1¼ oz. skeins) and 5 skeins of a contrasting color.
Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 4 (3½ mm. size).
6 buttons.

Gauge: 6 sts make 1 inch; 8 rows make 1 inch.

Back. Starting at bottom, with main color, cast on 90 sts, and work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) for 3½ inches, ending with a p row. Break off. Attach contrasting color and k across. Break off. Attach main color, and work as before, decreasing 1 st at beginning of next k row and every 11th row thereafter until 80 sts remain, and making a k row of contrasting color after every 3½ inches. Work straight until piece measures 11 inches. At beginning of next p row, bind off 9 sts (these 9 sts are turned under and hemmed, which forms a vent at center back), p across remaining sts. Work another piece exactly like this, reversing shapings and ending with a p row. Break off. Pick up first piece and k across, then k across second piece (142 sts in all). Hereafter, work in pattern, decreasing 1 st at both ends of every 11th row until 116 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 31 inches in all.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows, and 5 sts at beginning of each of the following 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row until 72 sts remain. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 30 sts remain. Bind off.

Right Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 99 sts and work in pattern as for Back for 2 inches. At the end of next p row, cast on 34 sts (thus starting front facing—133 sts), and continue in pattern, decreasing 1 st at side edge on next row and every 8th row thereafter until 116 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 21¼ inches. Then, on next row and every 6½ inches thereafter, make a pair of buttonholes until 4 buttonholes in all are made. To make a pair of buttonholes, starting at front edges, k 23, bind off 4 sts, k 12, bind off 4 sts and continue as usual; then, on next row, cast on 4 sts to replace those bound off. At the same time, dec. 1 st at side edge on next row and every 7th row thereafter until 106 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 31 inches in all.

To Shape Armhole: Starting at side edge, bind off 7 sts once, and 4 sts every other row 3 times. Then dec. 1 st at armhole edge every 3rd row until 69 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 8½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. On next row, starting at front edge, work across 1st 24 sts, bind off 21 sts, and continue across remaining 24 sts. Hereafter work over these 24 sts, continuing with decreases at armhole edge; at the same time, bind off 2 sts at inner edge every other row until all sts are bound off. Break off. Attach yarn at inner edge of remaining 24 sts and work inner edge as before; at the same time dec. 1 st at front edge on next row and every 3rd row thereafter until all sts are worked off.

Left Front. Work exactly as for Right Front, omitting buttonholes and reversing shapings.

Sleeves. Starting at bottom with main color, cast on 60 sts and work as for Back, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 7th row until there are 90 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 16½ inches. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 8 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of every 4th row until 58 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 5 inches. On next row, work across 1st 29 sts, turn (thus starting dart). Hereafter, work over these 29 sts only, decreasing 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row, until 9 sts remain. Work straight until dart measures 5¾ inches. Bind off. Break off. Attach yarn at base of dart, and work opposite side to correspond.

Sleeve Tabs: Starting at one side with main color, cast on 46 sts and work in pattern, increasing 1 st at beginning of every other k row, keeping opposite edge straight until piece measures 1¾ inches. Then dec. 1 st at straight edge each row 3 times. Bind off.

Collar. Starting at outside edge with main color, cast on 104 sts and work in pattern, increasing 1 st at both ends of each row 4 times (112 sts). Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 88 sts remain. On next row, work across 1st 36 sts, bind off 16 sts, k 36. Hereafter work over these last 36 sts, binding off 3 sts at inner edge every other row and decreasing 1 st at opposite edge on the same row until all sts are worked off. Break off. Attach yarn at inner edge and work opposite side to correspond.

Pockets. Starting at bottom, cast on 39 sts, and work in pattern for 6½ inches. Bind off. Sew up side seams. Sew darts of sleeves together on wrong side. Sew up sleeve seams. Place top of sleeves between shapings of Front and Back, and sew in place. Turn under the extension of Right Back, and hem. Place the extension piece of Left Back under the hem of Right Back, and sew in place. Fold the facing of both Fronts, so that buttonholes are in line with one another, and sew facing in place. Sew collar all around neck edge. Make a 1-inch hem around lower edges of coat and around sleeves. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.

Vertical Stripes: Starting at bottom edge of Back, between 14th and 15th sts from edge, with crochet hook and contrasting color, work in slip sts up Back to top. * Measure off 3½ inches and work another row of slip sts. Repeat from * across Back. Work vertical stripes in the same manner on all pieces, working the first stripe of Front, 10 sts in from edge and the first stripe of sleeves 4 sts in from seam edge. Make a hem all around sleeve tabs and sew on 2 inches above edge of sleeves, having the increase edge in line with sleeve seam. Sew a button on opposite edge at center and onto sleeve. Make a hem all around pockets and sew on as in illustration.
